Brianne Tju says Netflix’s Uglies is not a condemnation of cosmetic surgery. Her reading of the dystopian story is that beauty standards should not dictate a person’s worth—and that people should have the freedom to choose for themselves.

What Brianne Tju says Uglies is about

Tju, who plays Shay, describes the film as a story about choice, self-worth and bodily autonomy. In the exclusive interview reported by People via Yahoo Entertainment, she puts the distinction plainly: “This movie isn’t condemning surgery, it’s just saying that you have a choice. In no way do you have to follow these beauty standards in order to be valuable.”

That is Tju’s interpretation of the film, rather than a claim that every viewer will read it the same way. Her point is that the pressure to meet a prescribed ideal—not an individual’s decision about their appearance—is what the story asks audiences to question.

How the dystopian premise frames beauty standards

Uglies adapts Scott Westerfeld’s young-adult dystopian novel. In the story’s society, teenagers who have not yet turned 16 are called “uglies.” At 16, they are expected to undergo a procedure intended to make them “pretty,” placing appearance at the center of social belonging.

Tally, played by Joey King, is friends with Shay, who plans to leave that system and join the Smoke, a group that rejects the ugly/pretty divide. The premise turns a familiar pressure—being judged against an appearance ideal—into a rule imposed on an entire society.

Why Shay and Tally’s friendship matters to Tju’s reading

For Tju, the friendship between Shay and Tally is part of how the film explores self-worth. Their bond helps them recognize that they are lovable and capable as they are, and supports their ability to question the system around them. Tju describes that mutuality this way: “I think the greatest freedom that we can have is fighting for self-worth and autonomy for one another.”

The emphasis is not simply on resisting an external standard alone. In Tju’s view, friendship can help people see their own value and stand by one another when social expectations tell them otherwise.

From the novel to the film

The film is an adaptation of Westerfeld’s Uglies, bringing the novel’s dystopian beauty procedure and the Smoke to the screen. The interview’s emphasis on Tally and Shay’s relationship offers one way to understand how the adaptation communicates self-worth; the available reporting does not establish a detailed scene-by-scene comparison with the book.

Filters, Facetune and the film’s contemporary context

The interview connects the film’s beauty pressure to present-day practices such as social-media filters and Facetune. That comparison is context for the conversation, not evidence that these tools have a particular measured effect. Tju’s central point remains about personal value: conforming to beauty standards should not be a condition for being worthy.
