Akatsuki began as Yahiko, Nagato and Konan’s peace-seeking group in the Hidden Rain. The later organization’s recruitment history is only partly spelled out: official Naruto: Shippuden episode summaries explain Itachi’s entry and how he and Kisame recruited Deidara, but they do not give a joining story or motive for every member. Here is what those summaries establish—and what they leave open.
How did the original Akatsuki begin?
The official summary for “Creeping Shadow” says Yahiko, Nagato and Konan formed Akatsuki to bring peace to the Hidden Rain. It also says Obito, disguised as Madara Uchiha, warned the three that their ideals would fail.
That establishes the founding trio’s purpose and Obito’s contact with them. It does not give a complete account of how each founder later related to the reformed organization, or when any formal change in membership occurred.
What recruitment stories does the anime summary actually give?
| Person or group | What the official episode summaries establish |
|---|---|
| Yahiko, Nagato and Konan | They formed the original group to pursue peace in the Hidden Rain, according to “Creeping Shadow.” |
| Itachi | After becoming a rogue ninja, he joined Akatsuki. Pain and Orochimaru welcomed and introduced him as a former Leaf ANBU member and the man who massacred his clan, according to “The Darkness of the Akatsuki.” The summary does not state Itachi’s private reason for joining. |
| Juzo | Itachi’s first assigned partner in that same summary. It says their first joint job was an assassination request in the Land of Water; it does not explain how Juzo joined. |
| Kisame | A later summary says Itachi was partnered with Kisame and began missions as a member of Akatsuki. It does not describe Kisame’s original recruitment. |
| Deidara | Itachi and Kisame recruited him. The summary does not give Deidara’s reason for accepting. |
| Sasori | Pain assigned Deidara and Sasori as a team to hunt the deserter Orochimaru. This establishes the assignment, not how Sasori joined. |
| Orochimaru | He is present with Pain when Itachi is welcomed, and is later identified as the deserter the Deidara–Sasori team is sent to pursue. The summaries do not explain his recruitment. |
The Itachi–Kisame partnership and Deidara recruitment are described in “Partner.” These are the clearest individual recruitment events in the cited episode summaries.

What is known about the other Akatsuki members’ entry?
The summaries do not document precise joining circumstances or personal motives for Kakuzu, Hidan or Zetsu. They also do not establish when or how Obito formally became a member: the founding account records his warning to the trio, not a recruitment event. For Konan, Sasori, Kisame and Orochimaru, the summaries mention their connection to Akatsuki but do not tell how they were first recruited or why they joined.
That distinction matters: appearing in an Akatsuki-related event, being assigned a partner, or later working for the organization is not the same as a source describing how someone entered it. The episode summaries support a partial recruitment history, not a complete one.

Does this answer apply to the manga as well?
The recruitment details above are specifically what the official Naruto: Shippuden episode summaries say. They do not, by themselves, settle every difference between the television anime, manga, or other adaptations, nor do they provide a full roster chronology. Any more detailed account should identify the continuity it draws from rather than presenting an unstated motive or event as established across all versions.
