Why two clues point to “wink” and “nudge”

The paired clues resolve to WINK and NUDGE: repeated, they form “wink, wink” and “nudge, nudge,” expressions that can suggest an indirect or knowing meaning. The wording gives the same clue for two separate entries, so match each answer to its own Across number.

Answer notes

SKIS, not a mountain disaster

The mountain clue asks for the objects tumbling down by themselves: SKIS. It can evoke an avalanche, but the answer is the equipment.

INGOT and EGOT

INGOT is the one-word answer to “Gold brick.” EGOT is the short form in the clue about Whoopi Goldberg’s quartet of awards.
