The role puts her in an ensemble comedy; her path also runs through musical theater, the film Saturday Church, and a behind-the-scenes role on its stage adaptation.
What role does Michaela Jaé Rodriguez play in Loot?
Rodriguez plays Sofia Salinas, the Wells Foundation’s executive director. Apple describes Loot as a workplace comedy centered on Molly Wells, who turns toward self-discovery after a divorce settlement and becomes involved with her philanthropic organization. The series brings that personal story together with the work and relationships inside the foundation. Apple’s series page lists Rodriguez among the returning cast for season three, which premiered October 15, 2025.
Rodriguez has described Sofia’s changing life as part of the character’s appeal. In a 2025 Marie Claire interview, she discussed Sofia’s romantic phase in season two and the third season’s effort to reveal another side of her, including self-discovery and changes to her look. That is Rodriguez’s account of the character’s arc and the production’s choices—not a claim that Sofia’s story defines the comedy as a whole. Read the interview in Marie Claire.
How did musical theater shape her career?
Rodriguez’s early stage work includes the 2011 Off-Broadway revival of Rent, in which she played Angel Dumott Schunard. Sidewalks Entertainment’s 2025 biography also credits her with winning the Clive Barnes Award for that role. Sidewalks Entertainment’s biography is the source for that specific credit and award.

Music remains part of her recorded work as well as her stage history. Apple’s artist profile lists the Saturday Church (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) EP and Rodriguez’s tracks “Condition of Love” and “Condition of Love Reprise.” It also lists “30/90” from the tick, tick… BOOM! soundtrack. These are catalog associations; they do not establish whether a physical release is available. See Rodriguez’s Apple Music artist profile.
In the Marie Claire interview, Rodriguez described the difference she feels between acting and making music: “In the music world, I’m free.” Her comment offers a personal distinction between creative modes, rather than a general rule about either medium.

Why is Saturday Church a different kind of credit?
Rodriguez played Ebony in the 2017 film Saturday Church. When the story moved toward an Off-Broadway stage adaptation, she chose not to reprise the role. Instead, she took on producer and consultant roles, explaining that representation mattered to her and that she wanted another performer to have the opportunity for a star-making performance.
Rodriguez told Marie Claire she felt proud of the production and praised B Noel Thomas, who took on the stage role: “I do feel a tremendous sense of pride because I had already known that B Noel [Thomas] was an outstanding and tremendous talent.” The choice shows how her connection to a project can continue beyond performing in it: she could support the adaptation while leaving the role open to another artist.

What do these roles show about her work in comedy and music?
Loot gives Rodriguez a place in a continuing ensemble workplace comedy, with Sofia’s own personal changes unfolding alongside the foundation’s story. Her musical-theater background and soundtrack credits point to a parallel body of performance work, while her Saturday Church stage-adaptation involvement adds producing and consulting to the mix. These are distinct parts of her career, not evidence of a single defining style.
Rodriguez has also spoken about the kinds of romantic-comedy stories she wants to see: “We need to see all facets of a trans woman’s love and how someone else loves on her.” She framed that as a creative aspiration, not as confirmation of a specific project.
