At the 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, comedian Michelle Wolf joked that then-press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders burned facts and used the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Wolf said the next day that she meant to compliment Sanders’s eye makeup and ingenuity; the joke nevertheless prompted debate about whether it targeted Sanders’s appearance, her public conduct, or both.

During her 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner routine, Wolf invoked Aunt Lydia from The Handmaid’s Tale before delivering the smoky-eye line about Sanders:
“I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful. Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like, maybe she’s born with it; maybe it’s lies.”
The joke linked the makeup image to Wolf’s criticism of Sanders’s relationship with facts. The Aunt Lydia reference drew on the character from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

How Wolf explained the joke
The day after the dinner, Wolf defended the line on social media. CBS News reported her explanation: “I complimented her eye makeup and her ingenuity of materials.” That was Wolf’s account of her intent, not a resolution of how the joke came across to others.
Why the smoky-eye joke became controversial
Viewers and commentators disagreed about the joke’s target and tone: some read it as a comment on Sanders’s appearance, while others understood it as criticism of her public conduct—or as combining both. Contemporary coverage singled out the smoky-eye passage as a focus of the discussion, but responses were not unanimous.

The White House Correspondents’ Association also criticized the routine. In a statement reported by the Associated Press, it said the monologue “was not in the spirit of that mission,” referring to the dinner’s stated purpose of celebrating a vigorous, free press and honoring civility, reporting, and scholarship. That was the association’s position, not a universal verdict on the performance.

The line itself makes the connection between “burning facts” and the smoky-eye image. Wolf later said she intended a compliment about Sanders’s makeup and resourcefulness. The controversy reflects the gap between that stated intent and the different ways audiences interpreted the joke; the available accounts do not establish a single shared reading.
