What name did Malia use?
Malia wrote and directed The Heart, an 18-minute short submitted to the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Vanity Fair reported that the film’s credits listed her as “Malia Ann,” using her first and middle names rather than the Obama surname. Vanity Fair’s report describes the credit choice; it does not report that she legally changed her name.
What did Michelle Obama say?
Michelle discussed the decision with Kate and Oliver Hudson on their Sibling Revelry podcast. ABC News reported that the episode was published June 2, 2025, and quoted Michelle saying: “But we respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.” She also said the family understood that Malia wanted to establish herself on her own terms. Michelle connected the choice to a broader attitude shared by her daughters: wanting to be their own people and to feel they had earned their achievements, rather than have others assume opportunities were handed to them.

What did Barack Obama say about the choice?
Barack separately said Malia wanted audiences to watch the film without the association that comes with the Obama surname. His comments appeared on The Pivot Podcast the previous fall, as reported by ABC News and Vanity Fair. That explanation concerns how viewers might approach the film; it does not establish that Malia sought to conceal her identity.
What the credit does—and does not—mean
Using “Malia Ann” for a film credit is a professional naming choice. The reports identify her as Malia Obama or Malia Ann Obama and do not say she changed her legal name. Michelle’s public response was that she and Barack respected their daughter’s effort to make her own way.
