How did Fox join the series?
Fox had been watching Shrinking and reached out to its co-creator Bill Lawrence about appearing, according to the Los Angeles Times. The two had worked together on Spin City. Fox’s involvement was announced before season three aired: Apple’s October 2025 announcement listed him among the season’s new additions.
What does “return” mean in this casting news?
Fox announced an acting retirement in 2020. His Shrinking guest role marks a return to on-screen acting, but it should not be described as his first acting work of any kind since that announcement: the available accounts establish this appearance, not a complete chronology of his work. The Los Angeles Times identifies his 2020 memoir, No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, as the context in which he announced that retirement.
