It has the high-stakes jobs, volatile families and bluntly larger-than-life characters associated with Yellowstone, but swaps ranch politics for oil-boom business. The result can be funny and entertaining—especially when Billy Bob Thornton is on screen—but familiar Sheridan formulas and uneven use of its ensemble limit its promise.
What is Landman about?
Paramount describes Landman as an “upstairs/downstairs” story set in West Texas boomtowns, following both roughnecks and wealthy oil operators. The drama’s premise places the oil business at the intersection of local fortunes, climate, the economy and geopolitics. That is the studio’s framing of the show, not evidence that its scripted scenes accurately represent oilfield work.

Taylor Sheridan created the series, which is based on Boomtown, an 11-part podcast from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly. Paramount announced a 10-episode first season, originally scheduled to begin with two episodes on November 17, 2024, then continue weekly on Sundays. Paramount’s announcement said the series would stream exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States and in international markets where the service is available; it does not establish present-day availability or subscription terms.
Is Landman like Yellowstone?
Yes in its dramatic DNA, but not in its central workplace or conflict. Both are Sheridan dramas built around high-stakes livelihoods, family tension, tough characters and Western-inflected melodrama. Yellowstone centers on ranching and land; Landman shifts the arena to oil operations, where workplace danger and business problem-solving provide much of the action.

#1 Best Overall
That change gives Landman a distinct setting, but not necessarily a fresh storytelling formula. In a 2024 review, TV Guide’s Liam Mathews praised the oil patch as an interesting backdrop and found the first five episodes fast-moving, focused and mostly plausible. He also called the show derivative in places. His verdict was that it “doesn’t exactly feel fresh, but it’s more fun than any other Sheridan-penned show.” The review rated the series 7.9, an outlet score rather than an audience aggregate, and covered only five of the season’s 10 episodes. Read Mathews’s TV Guide review.
What works: Thornton, humor and a new arena
Mathews’s strongest praise was for Thornton’s performance as Tommy Norris: funny, melancholic and cranky. That comic edge gives Landman a lighter, less self-serious feel than the Sheridan dramas TV Guide compared it with. It also helps the show make its oil-industry setting feel like more than a change of scenery. The source review’s positive assessment of the early episodes rested on their brisk pace and focus as well as the appeal of the setting.

For viewers drawn to Yellowstone’s heightened characters but ready for a different industry and a more openly comic lead, that distinction is a real reason to try the show. It is not, however, a guarantee that the series will sustain a single tone or a tightly unified story.
Where the promise falters
Familiar Sheridan beats
The early criticism is not that Landman lacks energy; it is that some of its energy comes from recognizable Sheridan territory. TV Guide found the series familiar and short on new ground, even while judging it more fun than the creator’s other shows. The comparison with Yellowstone therefore works both as an invitation and a warning: the new setting changes the subject, but does not erase the formula.

Supporting characters can feel underused
Mathews also identified underused supporting characters as a weakness. That matters in a series whose premise spans oil workers and powerful operators: the breadth of the world creates expectations for an ensemble with room to develop. In the early episodes covered by TV Guide, that potential was not consistently realized.
Season 2’s shifts divide the experience
In a January 2026 review of the Season 2 finale, Washington Post critic Sophia Nguyen described the show as highly entertaining while faulting its erratic structure and movement among business thriller, family drama, romance and campus satire. She also criticized the series’ gender politics, interpreting its women as oversexualized and underdressed. Those are Nguyen’s assessments, not a universal critical consensus, but they sharpen the concern that the show’s provocative tone and multiple story modes do not always cohere. Her reaction—“It’s ludicrous. There’s nothing like it on television.”—captures the appeal and the excess in the same breath. Read Nguyen’s Washington Post review.

Is Landman realistic about oil work?
The available critical assessment is not a technical fact-check. TV Guide’s Mathews described the first five episodes as mostly plausible, but that is one reviewer’s impression of a scripted drama, not confirmation of its accuracy as a depiction of oilfield practice. Paramount’s description establishes the show’s intended setting and themes, not the realism of particular jobs, procedures or risks. Treat Landman as entertainment rather than an authoritative account of how the oil industry operates.
Is Landman worth watching?
It is a reasonable pick if you enjoy Sheridan’s heightened style, want a West Texas oil-business setting instead of another ranch drama, and like Thornton’s cranky comic presence. The case is weaker if you want a consistently fresh ensemble drama, restrained melodrama or a stable tone. The fairest verdict is mixed: Landman has a distinctive arena and an entertaining lead, but its early reliance on familiar beats and the later criticism of its structural swings make “more oil, less promise” a defensible reading—not a settled consensus.
