Kris Kristofferson later said he never expected to live past 30, reflecting on years when heavy drinking and depression shadowed his early success. In an account attributed to a 1998 People interview, he also said that seeing his character die in A Star Is Born helped him decide to stop drinking, because he did not want to die before his daughter grew up.
What Kristofferson meant by “I never thought I’d live past 30”
The line was a look back, not a prediction made when he was 30. Later reporting, published by AOL on September 30, 2024, attributes the recollection to a 1998 People interview. Kristofferson was reflecting on how differently his life might have turned out: “I never could have imagined this. I sit right here and think how it could have turned out so differently. I never thought I’d live past 30. I could have ended up dead.” AOL’s report is the accessible account of that interview; the original People page is not independently available here.

In the same reported interview, Kristofferson described himself as “a functioning alcoholic.” That phrase captures the contrast between visible professional success and a personal struggle: his career was advancing, but, as his official biography recounts, depression and problematic drinking made those years difficult.
How A Star Is Born figured in his decision to quit
Kristofferson starred opposite Barbra Streisand in the 1976 film A Star Is Born. His character dies in the story. In the account attributed to the 1998 interview, Kristofferson said watching that scene made him think about what his death would mean for his wife and children. He recalled: “I quit drinking over that. I didn’t want to die before my daughter grew up.” The later report connects the scene with his decision, but it does not establish that the film alone explains a complex personal change.

The film was also a milestone in his acting career. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum records that his performance earned a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Its biography places the role within a career that ran alongside his songwriting and recording work.
The success behind the difficult years
Kristofferson’s public identity was never only that of an actor. After serving as an Army officer and helicopter pilot, he resigned his commission in 1965 and went to Nashville to pursue songwriting. The Country Music Hall of Fame traces his route into the music business; his official biography describes the early struggle and the songs and albums that followed.

That context matters to the “dead by 30” remark. It came from a man looking back at a period when professional achievement did not mean that he felt secure or well. The official biography describes both the depression and problematic drinking amid his early success. Bob Dylan’s praise in that biography—“You can look at Nashville pre-Kris and post-Kris, because he changed everything”—speaks to Kristofferson’s influence as a songwriter, not to the private cost he described.

His later life makes the earlier line especially stark, but it should not be turned into a simple tale of excess followed by redemption. The account is his own retrospective description, conveyed through later reporting, with his family named as part of the reason he wanted to live.
