The examples below are an editorial selection of documented oddities—not an official ranking—and include museum artifacts, one-off fashion pieces, and limited-edition collaborations. Several are historical exhibits, not products confirmed to be on sale today.
Why Hello Kitty appears on such unexpected things
Hello Kitty’s first known appearance on merchandise was a coin purse in 1975, following Yuko Shimizu’s 1974 design, according to the Associated Press’s 2024 report (AP). The character’s reach extends far beyond that first accessory: the Government of Japan reported in 2025 that Sanrio produces around 50,000 products annually across 130 countries and regions (Government of Japan).
That scale helps explain the range, but it does not make every surprising object a regular retail product. Sanrio’s retrospective exhibition brought together more than 600 rare and unique archive pieces and over 40 mixed-media works; those figures describe the exhibition, not a complete catalog of Hello Kitty merchandise (Sanrio).
Everyday objects with an unexpected Hello Kitty twist
1. Hello Kitty motor oil
TIME named Hello Kitty motor oil as one of the unusual objects displayed in the retrospective. The report does not give a product date or establish that it is currently sold (TIME).

2. Hello Kitty toilet paper
Toilet paper was another of the surprising exhibit objects reported by TIME. It is an example of the character crossing into routine household supplies, not a current shopping recommendation (TIME).
3. Hello Kitty’s first telephone
Sanrio called out the character’s first telephone as part of the retrospective, and a Japanese American National Museum (JANM) caption dates the displayed vintage phone to 1976 (Sanrio; JANM). It is both a functional household object and a piece of early character merchandise.
4. Hello Kitty talking robot
A talking robot was among the contemporary objects Sanrio identified for the exhibition. JANM dates the displayed Hello Kitty Robot to 2004 (Sanrio; JANM). The sources establish it as an exhibit object, not as a product currently available for purchase.

5. Lady Gaga’s Hello Kitty plush dress
JANM captions a Hello Kitty dress made of plush toys and dates it to 2009; Sanrio describes the piece as one of a kind (JANM; Sanrio). This is a singular fashion artifact, not a mass-market dress.

6. Katy Perry’s Hello Kitty couture bustier
Sanrio listed a Hello Kitty couture bustier associated with Katy Perry among the retrospective objects (Sanrio). Its place in the exhibition makes it a fashion artifact; the announcement does not describe it as a retail apparel line.
7. Hello Kitty Nike Air Presto
Sanrio documented a limited-edition Nike Air Presto collaboration with a molded Hello Kitty heel, a bow on the tongue, and themed insoles (Sanrio). The same announcement says an earlier Nike design from 2004 was never fully produced and released to the public, so that unreleased design should not be confused with the later collaboration. Sanrio’s Jill Koch described the collaboration this way: “We’re so excited to finally unite our respective brand icons – Hello Kitty’s red bow and the Nike swoosh,” (Sanrio).

8. Hello Kitty diamond jewelry
Sanrio included diamond jewelry among the contemporary objects in the retrospective. Its announcement does not identify a particular brand, design, or price, so the safest description is simply a diamond-jewelry example rather than a specific product line (Sanrio).
9. Baccarat crystal Hello Kitty figurine
The Associated Press reported a Baccarat crystal Hello Kitty figurine among anniversary merchandise examples (AP). It is a striking contrast with the character’s everyday stationery and plush roots, but the report does not establish current price or availability.

10. Hello Kitty gold coin pendant
AP also reported an anniversary pendant showing Hello Kitty holding the number 50 (AP). The reported item makes a commemorative character accessory out of a gold coin motif; its price and availability are not treated here as current.

11. Hello Kitty vintage plush
JANM identifies a vintage Hello Kitty plush dated 1976 (JANM). Its age and archival context make it different from current plush merchandise: the museum caption documents this particular historical object, not a present-day listing.

12. Hello Kitty pet collars
AP reported Hello Kitty pet collars among anniversary merchandise examples (AP). The documented example extends the character’s reach from objects for people to accessories for pets; the report does not confirm that the collars remain available.
13. Hello Kitty Crocs
Crocs were also listed by AP among anniversary editions (AP). They stand out because a familiar character collaboration meets a distinctive, practical shoe style; this mention is not evidence of current stock.

14. The Hello Kitty “massager” that caused confusion
TIME reported on a Hello Kitty body “massager” that became an internet talking point because many people thought Sanrio had released a vibrator (TIME). The documented story is the public confusion over the object’s purpose; TIME does not establish that Sanrio marketed it as a sex toy. Curator Jamie Rivadeneira told TIME that Hello Kitty is “a blank canvas. She doesn’t have a mouth, so she can be whatever you want her to be.”
What these objects say about Hello Kitty
The examples span household utility, fashion, footwear, pet accessories, novelty items, and luxury collectibles. Some are dated archive objects, some are singular or limited collaborations, and others were reported as anniversary merchandise. Their shared trait is not that they are all equally strange, but that the character can move between ordinary use and display-worthy spectacle.
TIME quoted anthropologist and exhibit curator Christine Yano on the attention generated by controversy: “It became a sensation. Even if there might be some controversy, that’s more people paying attention and maybe more people buying the product.” (TIME)
