Kalki 2898 AD makes its strongest case as a collision of dystopian science fiction, monumental design and Indian mythic material—not as a uniformly successful story. Its world and Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama drew praise, while reviewers differed on Prabhas’s Bhairava and questioned whether the film’s pacing and exposition keep up with its ambition. “Great Indian spectacle” is a defensible verdict, but not a consensus.
Kalki 2898 AD movie review: what the film is about
Directed by Nag Ashwin, this Telugu-language science-fiction film is set in 2898 AD, in a future shaped by scarcity and authoritarian power. Supreme Yaskin rules over a desiccated world; bounty hunter Bhairava, played by Prabhas, becomes entangled with Sum-80, also called Sumathi and played by Deepika Padukone, and with Ashwatthama, played by Amitabh Bachchan.

Ashwatthama’s connection to the Mahabharata gives the futuristic conflict its mythic dimension. The film draws on that tradition without simply retelling the epic: ancient story and imagined future are brought into the same cinematic universe. That fusion is the film’s central proposition—and a major source of its scale and appeal.
Does the spectacle work?
For Leslie Felperin of The Guardian, the film’s maximalist mixture is part of the fun. Felperin called it “This fizzy Telugu-language mashup of Indian mythology, martial arts and Bollywood-style dance-romance-and-melodrama plot mechanics, all filtered through a fine sci-fi sieve, is mostly a hoot.” The review finds entertainment in the very combination that could have seemed unwieldy.
#1 Best Overall
Bollywood Hungama’s 2024 review likewise praised the visual effects and the integration of mythology, rating the film 4 out of 5. It called the result a grand spectacle and a distinctive experience. But that enthusiasm came with a reservation: the review also described the first half as weak and said the world-building was not explained sufficiently.
The Indian Express review was more guarded. Shubhra Gupta rated the Hindi version 2.5 out of 5, finding the film’s momentum diminished in the first half before the post-interval stretch. Together, these reviews suggest that visual scale is a defining strength, but not proof that the storytelling works equally well for every viewer.

Pacing, exposition and the cost of ambition
The clearest shared caveat is that the film takes time to get moving. Gupta’s review points to a first half that loses momentum; Bollywood Hungama also calls that stretch weak. The Guardian notes the film’s length, though Felperin finds the sprawling mix entertaining overall.
There is also a distinction between presenting a vast world and making it immediately legible. Bollywood Hungama says the world-building is insufficiently explained, while the film’s mythic and science-fiction elements ask viewers to absorb a large premise. If you prefer a brisk setup and a neatly self-contained story, the exposition and deliberate buildup may feel like obstacles rather than invitations into the world.

How do Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas fare?
Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama
Bachchan is a standout in Gupta’s review. She writes: “Kalki may have Prabhas as the headliner, but it is Amitabh Bachchan all the way — his Ashwatthama is suitably gravelly and towers over the film.” The assessment emphasizes the presence and physical authority he brings to a character who links the future plot to the film’s mythological roots.
Prabhas as Bhairava
Critical responses to Prabhas are less uniform. Some praise his action and comic appeal; Gupta’s review finds his early characterization overextended. That difference reflects a broader tension in the film: Bhairava’s swagger and humor can add levity to an enormous, serious-looking world, but the approach may not work for viewers who want the central character established more quickly.
Rank #4
Is Kalki 2898 AD a complete story?
The film extends its story into a larger saga rather than offering a fully self-contained resolution. That setup may be welcome if you enjoy franchise-building and want the world to continue expanding. If you want every major thread settled in one film, the ending may feel more like a bridge to what follows than a final destination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The verdict: a great Indian spectacle, with qualifications
Calling Kalki 2898 AD a “great Indian spectacle” is most persuasive when “spectacle” means ambition: a large-scale science-fiction world, mythic connections to the Mahabharata and a memorable Ashwatthama performance. It is less persuasive as a claim that the film’s pacing and storytelling are equally assured. The Guardian’s playful enthusiasm, Bollywood Hungama’s strong rating and the Indian Express’s more critical assessment show why the response is mixed rather than universal.

If striking world-building, mythological reinterpretation and franchise-scale ambition are what you want, the film has substantial appeal. If tight pacing, clear exposition and a conclusive standalone plot matter more, its weaknesses may outweigh its visual and performance highs.
