What happened to Jeremy Carter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Jeremy was found unresponsive while taking a nap at his family’s home in Fayette County on December 20, 2015. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. He was 28.

What was reported about the autopsy
In its December 21, 2015 report, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation would not conduct an autopsy after consulting with the Fayette County Coroner’s Office. The report did not state why that decision was made. It attributes the decision to the GBI; it does not say that Jeremy’s family chose against an autopsy.
What the reports do—and do not—establish
The AJC accounts describe the circumstances in which Jeremy was found and report that he died at a hospital, but they do not identify a medical cause of death. They also do not explain the decision not to conduct an autopsy. The decision itself should not be treated as an explanation for his death.

Family and memorial plans
The December 21 report identified Jeremy as the son of Annette and Jeff Carter, whom it described as Jimmy Carter’s youngest son. A later AJC report said a private memorial service was planned in Plains. The family asked people to make donations to the Rosalynn Carter Institute of Caregiving in lieu of flowers; that was the family’s request as reported at the time.
