What is known about his life away from acting?
Retrospective accounts say Schoeffling made handcrafted furniture in Pennsylvania. Us Magazine reports that he and his wife moved away from Hollywood and opened a woodworking design business. These accounts describe a past career change; they do not establish whether the business currently operates, whether it takes commissions, or whether there is a public shop or catalog.
Later coverage characterizes Schoeffling as private. The available accounts do not provide a reliable picture of his daily life, and there is no basis to infer more than they report. A secondary article recounts a line attributed to Schoeffling in a 1990 Los Angeles Times interview: “Actors spend most of their time out of work, so I actually spend more time making furniture, he said.” Because the original interview is not available in the cited account, the wording should be treated as a second-hand attribution rather than a verified interview quotation.
