The label was the commenters’ interpretation—not an established description of Balvin’s beliefs or the video’s intent.
What prompted the criticism?
The controversy centered on “Cuidao Por Ahí,” a J Balvin and Bad Bunny music video filmed in Greece. Lena Hansen’s August 27, 2019 report for People en Español describes imagery that some viewers found dark or religiously charged: both performers dressed in black, zombie-like dancers, black birds, goth-inspired makeup, and white buildings that appeared to drip blood. The report also describes Balvin wearing a leather muzzle and floating upside down beneath a bridge.

Those are the reporter’s descriptions of scenes, not evidence of what the artists intended them to symbolize. The article recounts individual commenters calling the video “satanic” and asking, “Are you the antichrist?” Those remarks document some viewers’ reactions; they do not establish a consensus.
What did J Balvin say?
Hansen quoted Balvin’s Instagram response as: “If being satanic means creating content that is different and entertaining, then what am I? Be sincere, because the internet gives strength to cowards. So vent, let it all out.” The wording is attributed to his Instagram message through the People en Español report, rather than a direct capture of the original post.

Balvin’s reply framed the dispute around creative difference and online criticism. The same report quotes one commenter arguing that making different, entertaining content need not mean disrespecting God, the church, or religious people. That, too, is one person’s view, not a measure of audience opinion.

The story establishes that some viewers used the “satanic” label and that Balvin responded on Instagram. It does not establish that the video was satanic, that Balvin held satanic beliefs, or what the performers and filmmakers intended by the imagery. Nor does it quantify how widespread the criticism was. People en Español reported that Balvin had over 32 million Instagram followers at the time; that is a historical figure from 2019, not a current count.
