Three songs from James Bond films have won the Academy Award for Original Song: “Skyfall,” “Writing’s on the Wall,” and “No Time To Die.” Their Oscars were presented in 2013, 2016, and 2022, respectively. Those are ceremony years; the films were released in 2012, 2015, and 2021.

Which James Bond songs won Oscars?

Song Bond film Film year Oscar ceremony Credited songwriters Result
“Skyfall” Skyfall 2012 2013 Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth Winner, Original Song
“Writing’s on the Wall” Spectre 2015 2016 Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith Winner, Original Song
“No Time To Die” No Time to Die 2021 2022 Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell Winner, Original Song

The Academy lists all three as winners in its official records for the 2013, 2016, and 2022 ceremonies. The category’s formal name is Original Song; “theme song” is the familiar shorthand for these Bond title songs.

Why do the film and Oscar years differ?

The Oscar ceremony recognizing a film’s song takes place after the film’s release year in each of these cases. For example, “Skyfall” is from the 2012 film, but it won at the 2013 ceremony. The same pattern applies to “Writing’s on the Wall” and “No Time To Die.” Keeping the film year separate from the ceremony year avoids a common source of confusion when comparing the winners.

Was “Skyfall” the first Bond song to win?

Yes. The Academy’s retrospective identifies “Skyfall” as the first James Bond song to win Original Song. Its account also notes that the film became the first Bond film to win two Oscars. The Academy’s 85th Awards memorable moments retrospective places the song’s win in that broader milestone.

How many Bond songs have been nominated?

“No Time To Die” was the sixth song from the franchise nominated for Original Song, according to the Academy’s 2022 nomination sidebar. Before the three winners, Bond songs nominated included “Live and Let Die,” “Nobody Does It Better” from The Spy Who Loved Me, and “For Your Eyes Only.” These nominations are part of the category’s history, but they were not wins. The Academy’s 2022 ceremony page identifies “No Time To Die” as a winner and provides the nomination context.
