Ghost layers—also called invisible layers—are cut inside the hair, beneath the visible top layer. They can add subtle movement or lift while leaving the haircut’s outer shape comparatively intact. They are not a guaranteed way to create dramatic volume or remove a large amount of weight: the result depends on your hair’s density and texture, the stylist’s technique, and how much interior hair is removed.
What are ghost layers?
Ghost layers are internal layers hidden beneath the surface hair. Because the shortest pieces are not meant to create an obvious stepped outline, the haircut can look largely one-length while moving more freely. The name does not describe one standardized cut. American Salon’s trend overview presents ghost layers as a modern form of internal, diffused or invisible layering. Its practical effect depends on how much hair is layered and where: more layering can create more lift or separation, but may also make the change more visible. What can they do—and what are you asking for?
People may use “ghost layers” to mean cuts serving different goals. Tell your stylist the result you want rather than relying on the trend name alone.

These approaches are related, but not interchangeable. A delicate layer for movement may remove little weight. If you want a substantial reduction in bulk, Hair.com notes that traditional layering may be more suitable.
Who might consider them?
Hair.com discusses ghost layers for fine, medium, thick, and curly or coily hair, with the right approach depending on texture and density. For fine hair, the appeal may be movement without an obviously thinned silhouette. For thicker hair, internal work may help address bulk while keeping the outline. Neither result is automatic; the stylist needs to assess your hair and the shape you want.

- Thick hair: Clarify whether you want movement or a meaningful reduction in interior bulk; those goals can call for different amounts and placements of layering.
- Curly or coily hair: Discuss how much the shape may expand. American Salon’s educator guidance cautions that tighter curls or coils may expand more when layered.
If your priority is keeping the current length and outline, say so explicitly. If your priority is removing a lot of weight, ask whether a more traditional layer would better fit that goal.
How to explain the cut to your stylist
Bring several inspiration photos, ideally showing hair with a texture and density similar to yours. Hair.com suggests asking for invisible layers and specifying that you want to retain your current length and shape. Then name your main goal—lift, movement, or reduced bulk—and invite the stylist to explain what is realistic for your hair.

You could say: “I’d like subtle internal or invisible layers for movement while keeping my overall length and outline. My main goal is [lift, movement, or reducing bulk]. What would work with my density and texture?”
Styling and upkeep
Ghost layers can be worn sleek and straight or styled into bouncy waves, according to Hair.com. The visible effect will vary with your texture and styling, so discuss what you want the haircut to do on ordinary days, not only when it is salon-styled.

Hair.com offers touch-ups about every other haircut as general guidance, not a universal schedule. How often you need a refresh depends on how quickly your hair grows and whether the internal shape still gives you the result you want. For the specific thick-hair bob in its tutorial, Jatai Academy says the hair can be blow-dried with a brush or air-dried, and that products are not necessary for the demonstrated result.
