In a 2025 interview with People, Simpson described details she remembered from the day after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed and said a towel she later saw in body-camera footage convinced her Alex Murdaugh was responsible. Those are her recollections and interpretation—not a forensic finding. The legal status has since changed: South Carolina’s 2023 murder convictions were overturned in May 2026, and prosecutors said they would retry the case.
What Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson says she saw
Simpson told People that she had worked as a housekeeper for the Murdaugh family since 2007 and had become close to Maggie. She recalled being asked to clean the family’s Moselle home on the morning after Maggie and Paul were killed on June 7, 2021, before visitors arrived.
The laundry room and Maggie’s car
In the interview, Simpson said Maggie’s Mercedes was parked somewhere she considered unusual. She also recalled seeing pajamas and underwear arranged on the laundry-room floor. These are details from Simpson’s account, as reported by People; they should not be mistaken for findings established by a court.
The towel in the body-camera footage
Simpson said she had washed a beach towel on the day of the killings and put it on a high laundry-room shelf. She later recognized what she believed was that towel in body-camera footage of Alex Murdaugh’s vehicle. People quoted her reaction: “I looked at the towel and I said, ‘Oh my God. He did it,’” she recalls.

That statement describes Simpson’s personal conclusion after watching the footage. Her account does not establish that the towel was used to clean up, or that it carried relevant DNA. People also reported Simpson’s speculation that another person might have helped with cleanup or staging; that, too, is her theory, not an established fact.
What the memoir is about
The book’s full title is Within the House of Murdaugh: Amid a Unique Friendship, Blanca and Maggie, by Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson and Mary Frances Weaver. Catalog and retailer listings identify it as a 2025 English-language print book. The focus is Simpson’s personal account of her years working for the family and her relationship with Maggie, rather than an official investigative or forensic report.

People described Moselle as a 1,770-acre hunting estate in its 2025 feature. That figure is the publication’s description, not a measurement made by Simpson.
How the case status changed after the feature
People’s November 2025 feature described Alex Murdaugh as convicted of the murders. That is no longer the current procedural status. On May 13, 2026, the Supreme Court of South Carolina reversed the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial and remanded the case. The court’s June 8, 2026 order addressed which judge would have jurisdiction over a future retrial. The South Carolina Attorney General said on May 13 that prosecutors would retry the murder case.

The reversal does not mean a retrial has already taken place or that the charges have been resolved. Simpson’s words “I knew he did it” are her account of what she concluded from the towel footage; they are not a current verdict or a court’s finding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read Simpson’s account
The memoir and interview offer a firsthand personal perspective on Maggie and life in the Murdaugh household. The laundry-room details, towel identification, and conclusions about what happened remain attributed to Simpson. Separately, the Supreme Court opinion and orders document the case’s later procedural developments. Keeping those categories distinct helps readers understand what the book can illuminate—and what it does not establish.
