It is an editorial judgment, not an official WWE ranking or a claim about fan consensus. I weigh the best match most heavily, then card depth, memorable moments, stakes, atmosphere and how well the event works as a complete show.
Backlash ran annually from 1999 through 2009, returned in 2016 and continued annually except for 2019. The series also included two editions called WrestleMania Backlash and the 2024 event branded Backlash France. The chronology and naming are cross-checked against The SmackDown Hotel’s Backlash event list.

How the ranking works
A famous main event can lift a show, but it cannot make every undercard match compelling. The order below favors a strong top match while rewarding events that also offer depth, consequential title or storyline stakes, and a distinct atmosphere. It is a qualitative comparison, not a points system. Match outcomes are not a substitute for match quality: a championship changing hands does not automatically make an event better than one with a more satisfying card.
“Backlash” here means the full 21-event chronology, including WrestleMania Backlash 2021 and 2022 and Backlash France 2024. The event database records no 2019 edition. The latest completed event in this ranking is Backlash 2026.

Backlash 2004
The 2004 card has the best combination of a major championship match and a genuinely distinctive second feature. Chris Benoit retained the World Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat against Shawn Michaels and Triple H, while Randy Orton defended the Intercontinental Championship against Mick Foley under Hardcore Rules. Those two very different contests give the event range: a high-stakes title centerpiece and a brutal, rule-bending title defense. Backlash 2001
Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle’s submission match is the defining reason to put 2001 near the top. Benoit won 4–3 in sudden-death overtime after 30 minutes, a clear and unusually structured contest whose result gives the event a strong focal point. That format makes the match memorable without needing to embellish what the result itself establishes. WWE’s early-event results archive records the match and outcome.

Backlash 2000
The Rock defeating Triple H for the WWE Championship, with Shane McMahon as special guest referee, gives this edition a high-stakes, volatile centerpiece. The card also includes Chris Benoit beating Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship, adding another meaningful title result. The main event’s championship stakes and unusual officiating help make 2000 one of the series’ strongest early entries.

Backlash 1999
The debut made its identity clear with a major WWE Championship match: Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated The Rock. That is an exceptionally strong headline for a first edition. The card also included Mankind versus Big Show in a Boiler Room Brawl, giving the show a second distinctive attraction. Its place just below 2000 and 2001 reflects a more top-heavy case: the main event is the enduring anchor, while the available match evidence establishes less card-wide depth.

Backlash 2026
Roman Reigns defeating Jacob Fatu headlines the latest completed edition. WWE’s event summary also records Bron Breakker over Seth Rollins, Trick Williams retaining against Sami Zayn, Danhausen and Minihausen defeating The Miz and Kit Wilson, and IYO SKY defeating Asuka. That mix of prominent names, a title defense and a notably unconventional tag match gives the card variety beyond its main event. WWE’s Backlash event page and official show archive list the results.

Backlash 2025
John Cena defeated Randy Orton in the Undisputed WWE Championship match, giving 2025 a major headline contest. The rest of the official results include Gunther over Pat McAfee, Dominik Mysterio retaining against Penta, Lyra Valkyria retaining against Becky Lynch, and Jacob Fatu retaining in a four-way with LA Knight, Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre. There is plenty of recognizable competition and title activity across the card. The spread of results gives the event a strong overall profile, though the evidence available here does not establish a specific match-quality case to place it above the higher-ranked shows. How Backlash changed after its hiatus
The event’s long first run ended after 2009. It returned in 2016, with no 2019 edition in the later chronology. The branding also shifted: the 2021 and 2022 shows used the name WrestleMania Backlash, while 2024 was presented as Backlash France. These names and gaps matter when comparing eras: the list ranks the full series chronology, not just shows bearing the unmodified “Backlash” label.

WWE’s early Backlash results archive documents match outcomes for the first years covered in its retrieved archive, including the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004 examples discussed above. It should not be treated as a single source for every edition.
