Deadpool & Wolverine is often described as having a half-billion-dollar budget, but the available figures do not establish that as its production cost. Variety reported about $200 million for production and roughly another $100 million for promotion in July 2024. Box Office Mojo currently lists a $537 million budget without explaining what the figure measures. The sources do not reconcile the difference.
What did Deadpool & Wolverine cost to make?
Variety’s July 2024 opening report put the film’s production cost at about $200 million, with roughly another $100 million spent on promotion. Those are attributed estimates, not an audited accounting of the film’s total cost. The figures keep production and promotion distinct; they should not be combined and presented as a verified all-in budget. Variety’s opening report is the source for those estimates.

Why does Box Office Mojo list $537 million?
Box Office Mojo’s current page lists the budget as $537 million, but does not explain whether that means production cost, a gross figure before offsets, or some other accounting measure. It is therefore best described as a database listing—not as a confirmed production budget. No source cited here reconciles it with Variety’s lower estimate. Box Office Mojo’s film page also provides the current box-office totals.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About $200 million | Production | Variety estimate reported in July 2024 |
| Roughly $100 million | Promotion | Separate Variety estimate reported in July 2024 |
| $537 million | Budget listing; accounting basis not explained | Box Office Mojo, current page accessed in 2026 |
What the box-office numbers do—and do not—show
Box-office gross is ticket revenue before it is divided between theaters and studios and before other costs are accounted for. It is not studio profit, and comparing gross directly with production spending does not establish whether a film made money.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
| Milestone | Amount and scope | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Opening weekend | $444.1 million worldwide, including $211 million domestically | The Walt Disney Company, July 2024; Disney called it the largest global opening for an R-rated film at that time |
| After 23 days | $1.086 billion worldwide | The Walt Disney Company, August 2024; Disney said it was then the highest-grossing R-rated film globally |
| Cumulative total | $1,338,073,645 worldwide: $636,745,858 domestic and $701,327,787 international | Box Office Mojo, current page accessed in 2026 |
The opening-weekend figures reported by Disney and Variety differ slightly, reflecting estimates and publication timing. Disney’s later milestones and Box Office Mojo’s cumulative total refer to different reporting dates and periods, so they should not be treated as interchangeable figures.
Disney Studios Publicity UK reported that the film crossed $1 billion globally in August 2024, calling it Disney’s 31st film and the MCU’s 11th title to reach that mark under the franchise counting conventions in its announcement. Disney Studios Publicity UK’s announcement gives that milestone and its counting context.

The film behind the numbers
Released in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Directed by Shawn Levy, the story brings the pair together for a mission involving the Time Variance Authority and a threat to Deadpool’s universe. The title’s half-billion-dollar wording reflects Box Office Mojo’s unexplained $537 million listing, not a production cost confirmed by the trade estimate cited here. The most defensible summary is to keep the sources separate: Variety reported about $200 million for production plus roughly $100 million for promotion, while Box Office Mojo lists $537 million as the budget without stating its accounting basis. Neither figure establishes the movie’s net cost or profit.
