Yes—Sam Carver leaves Firehouse 51 at the end of “Bar Time,” but the episode presents it as a step away to confront his drinking, not as confirmation that he is permanently leaving Chicago Fire.

Does Carver leave Firehouse 51?
He does leave the house at the episode’s end. The distinction is what that departure means: “Bar Time” depicts Carver stepping away from 51 to address his drinking. It does not establish that he has quit the series or that his departure is permanent.
What leads to his decision
According to the episode recap, Violet discovers Carver has been working shifts at another firehouse. He tells her that a friend who broke into her home and tried to hurt her on his behalf frightened him, prompting him to distance himself from Violet and other people he cares about. He has also stopped attending AA meetings because he felt they were not helping.

Their later confrontation turns on Violet’s suspicion that he has been drinking. Carver says he is sober while on duty and that a drink spilled on him during a call. Violet does not believe him. The argument ends with Carver walking away; later, he leaves her a note reading, “You’ve always mattered,” and “See you on the other side.” The recap describes Stella Kidd as expressing pride in his difficult choice. How the episode’s two personal stories compare
Carver’s choice carries the episode’s largest consequence: it changes his place at 51 and gives the title’s departure question a clear, if limited, answer. Violet’s confrontation makes that choice personal rather than simply procedural. The note suggests that leaving the house does not erase the importance of their relationship, while stopping short of resolving what comes next for either of them.
Novak’s story provides a second, more contained emotional thread. The recap identifies her late-night ride-along visitor as Scott Osbourne, her former fiancé. Novak had ended their engagement without telling him; after she apologizes, the episode brings their conflict to better terms. TV Fanatic’s “Bar Time” recap.
As a review, the useful comparison is whether these strands complement each other: Carver’s decision has immediate consequences at the firehouse, while Novak and Osbourne’s reconciliation works through an old personal rupture. Their contrast can give the episode range, though viewers may find the secondary story more or less compelling depending on how much weight they want placed on Carver’s central arc.

Why “leaves 51” is more accurate than “quits the show”
Actor Jake Lockett discussed Carver’s earlier choice point in a TVLine interview published November 12, 2024, before “Bar Time” aired. He described the tension between staying with people who see his better self and taking a more comfortable route elsewhere, saying, “I think this is that kind of fork in the road for him.” That interview offers prior-season context, not an explanation or confirmation of the episode’s eventual outcome. For the outcome shown in this episode, the precise wording is that Carver steps away from Firehouse 51 to deal with his drinking. A permanent series exit is not confirmed by “Bar Time.”
