Cate Blanchett’s “middle class” remark came during a United Nations press conference at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where she was discussing refugee advocacy and the voices of displaced people. The phrase spread online because many viewers saw a contradiction between calling herself middle class and the wealth associated with global celebrity. Blanchett’s full comment was about acknowledging privilege, not a standalone claim about her earnings.

What did Cate Blanchett say at Cannes?

At a United Nations press conference on May 20, 2024, Blanchett reflected on her position as an advocate working alongside refugees and refugee filmmakers. The Guardian quoted her saying: “I’m white, I’m privileged, I’m middle class, and I think, you know, one can be accused of having a bit of a white saviour complex.” She went on to describe how encounters with refugees had changed her perspective. The Guardian’s account places the phrase within that broader reflection on privilege and advocacy.

In other words, “middle class” was one element in a self-conscious description that also named her whiteness and privilege. It was not, in the quoted passage, a statement about her income or a detailed account of her finances.

Why did TikTok react to the remark?

As clips and reports circulated, the class phrase became the focus of a separate argument. Critics questioned how a famous actor could describe herself as middle class; other social-media responses defended the possibility that she was using the term to describe background or outlook rather than current wealth. PerthNow reported criticism and supportive reactions across TikTok and X, illustrating the competing readings rather than resolving them. Its coverage captured the online reaction.

What can “middle class” mean in this debate?

The disagreement turns partly on what people mean by class. In an economic frame, class is judged mainly through income or wealth; through that lens, many viewers found the label hard to reconcile with Blanchett’s celebrity status. In a cultural or social frame, class can also refer to a person’s background, outlook, education or social position. Those are different ways of interpreting the word, not a single standardized test that settles Blanchett’s class position.

Van Badham’s Guardian commentary argued for a social-class interpretation in the Australian context. That is the author’s reading of the phrase, not an authoritative classification of Blanchett. Likewise, the online criticism reflects how many people understood the label, but it does not by itself establish her personal economic circumstances.

Did Blanchett respond to the backlash?

In a later interview reported by The Independent on November 30, 2024, Blanchett said, “And maybe middle class is about outlook.” In the same exchange, she added, “But, anyway, I’m sorry if I offended anyone.” Director Guy Maddin defended her wording, saying, “You were using the standard British definition of middle class.” These comments show how the later discussion framed the disagreement: Maddin invoked a British-class reading, while Blanchett suggested outlook could be relevant and apologized to anyone offended. The Independent reported the exchange.

What the controversy does—and does not—establish

The Cannes remarks are well documented as part of a conversation about refugee work and self-awareness around privilege. The ensuing argument shows that “middle class” can carry different economic and cultural meanings for different audiences. The coverage cited here does not establish a verified net-worth figure or a definitive class classification for Blanchett, and neither is needed to understand why the wording drew attention.
