The placement was part of the joke; Murray’s explanation was an explicit tribute: “Let’s face it. ‘Weekend Update’ would simply not exist without him, so it would be wrong to have him listed anywhere but number four.”
What Murray said about Chase
Murray’s ranking treated Chase as the segment’s indispensable starting point, even as it placed him below other anchors. Chase was the first Weekend Update anchor, and Murray said the feature would not exist without him. The line is best read as praise wrapped in a comic ranking, not as an objective judgment of the anchors’ relative merits.
The anniversary special aired live from New York on NBC and Peacock, according to the Associated Press. Variety’s account of the segment reported Murray’s remark, while Rolling Stone also covered his ranking of past anchors.
Chase’s place in the anniversary special
Murray’s tribute was a brief mention during the live show, not a speaking appearance by Chase. Chase later said he was hurt that he had no speaking role and wondered, “Why was Bill Murray there and why was I not? I don’t have an answer for that.” Those comments were reported in December 2025 by The Independent, in its coverage of comments from a documentary interview.
In the same report, creator Lorne Michaels said versions of the segment involving Chase had been considered, but the production used another version. Michaels also recalled a caution that Chase “wasn’t as focused.” These are retrospective explanations, not information viewers had during the February broadcast.

The tribute can be described as a warm acknowledgment of Chase’s importance to Weekend Update. The available reporting on this moment does not establish a detailed account of the Murray–Chase feud or show that the old dispute caused the anniversary segment’s format. It also does not establish a reconciliation. The safest conclusion is narrower: Murray publicly credited Chase with helping make the segment possible, while Chase later expressed hurt about his lack of a speaking role in the special.
