Boston Rob Mariano’s reasoning was that facing the Banker could be worth the risk when Deal or No Deal Island offered no dependable, round-long safety like an individual immunity win on Survivor. The gamble was not automatically smart: its upside had to help his game more than the downside could hurt it, and luck still mattered.
Why would Boston Rob want to face the Banker?
In a first-season interview with Parade’s Mike Bloom on April 22, 2024, Mariano described players’ attitudes changing over time. At first, they avoided the Banker; as they recognized how little absolute safety the format offered, some began to see a risk as worthwhile when it could create a strategic advantage.

“Because there’s no absolute safety, it makes sense to take the risk, if the upside benefits your game more than the downside,” Mariano said. That is his explanation of the tradeoff, not proof that any particular choice had mathematically favorable odds.
A good deal could give a player influence over who went home. But influencing the vulnerable group did not guarantee control of the outcome: the player still relied on luck and on favorable results from the people working with them. Mariano’s point was that a risky move might improve a player’s position even when it could not eliminate uncertainty.

How was this different from Survivor?
Mariano contrasted the shows’ mechanics rather than treating them as equivalent elimination games. In his account, winning individual immunity on Survivor protects a player through that round. On Deal or No Deal Island, a good deal could let a contestant choose who left, but managing who was vulnerable did not make the contestant immune to chance.
| Strategic question | Survivor, as Mariano described it | Deal or No Deal Island, as Mariano described it |
|---|---|---|
| What offers dependable safety? | An individual immunity win protects the winner through that round. | Mariano said there was no comparable absolute safety except winning the challenge and being safe. |
| Where can a player exert influence? | The interview does not detail a direct equivalent to choosing an elimination through a deal. | A player making a good deal could choose who went home. |
| What remains outside a player’s control? | The interview does not quantify or compare the shows’ overall uncertainty. | Luck and the actions of other players could still shape the result. |
That distinction helps explain why the Banker risk could look attractive: a player might gain influence without securing the kind of protection Mariano associated with immunity.

Was taking the risk always the right strategy?
No. Mariano framed it as conditional: the upside had to benefit a player’s game more than the downside harmed it. In a January 27, 2025 TV Insider interview, he added a complementary point while discussing the second season: “If you can put yourself in a position that you are safe at temple, then you really reduce the variance and risk involved.” He was hosting the aftershow, not describing a new first-season decision.
His comments point to two different strategic aims. A player may take a Banker risk to gain leverage, or seek safety at the Temple to reduce exposure to chance. Which is preferable depends on the player’s position and what the move can accomplish; Mariano did not give a probability or expected-value calculation for a specific choice.

What was known about the strategy at the time?
Before the first season premiered, Mariano told The Boston Globe on February 21, 2024: “Nobody really knows what the correct strategy is because this game has never been played before.” He described players trying to work out the game in real time and said its uncontrollable variance was part of what made it interesting.
The interviews explain Mariano’s general reasoning, but they do not identify the exact episode or discrete decision behind the phrase “huge gamble,” provide an offer amount, or establish the odds of that specific move. The defensible takeaway is his broader strategic logic: when safety is conditional, taking a risk can make sense if the leverage it offers is worth the exposure it creates.
