Spoiler warning: This recap discusses major events in Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, “Counting Coup,” including Colby’s death.
Jamie’s cover-up is closing in
Detective Dillard questions Jamie about Sarah and tells him he is a suspect. Once Dillard leaves, Jamie destroys Sarah’s documents—a move that suggests he is trying to erase evidence even as the investigation narrows around him.
His predicament is larger than the detective’s questions. Kayce learns Sarah was targeted and traces the attack to Grant Horton, whom the Entertainment Weekly recap identifies as connected to the firm Sarah hired against the Duttons. As the family’s crisis comes into focus, Jamie’s position looks increasingly untenable.
Kayce confronts Grant—and lets him live
Kayce tracks Grant down and confronts him, striking and threatening him. But he does not kill him. Instead, Kayce leaves him with a warning and a reference to “counting coup,” choosing intimidation over lethal retaliation.

#1 Best Overall
That restraint sits alongside Kayce’s explanation to Monica: he is acting for his family. His confrontation is personal, but the episode frames it within the Duttons’ wider effort to respond to the attack.
Colby dies trying to protect Carter
The episode’s most devastating loss comes at the stable. When a horse attacks Carter, Colby steps in to protect him. The horse tramples and kicks Colby, killing him. It is a sudden accident, not a deliberate attack by another person.
Rank #2
Colby’s death leaves Teeter, Ryan, Carter, and Rip devastated. Beth comforts Carter and Rip as the ranch hands face the loss. The scene shifts the episode away from the schemes and threats around the Duttons to the immediate cost of life on the ranch.
The ranch’s future is uncertain
Grief arrives alongside financial pressure. With John dead, the ranch is struggling, and Rip says livestock and horses will have to be sold. That practical decision adds another layer of uncertainty to a household already dealing with violence, suspicion, and loss.
