Gemma escapes Lumon, but Innie Mark does not leave with her. After confronting the fact that his life is at stake in Outie Mark’s rescue plan, he turns back toward Helly. Their goodbye—“See you at the Equator”—marks the point where their paths split, not a mystery the episode definitively explains.
What happens in the Severance Season 2 finale?
Mark learns Gemma can still be saved
“Cold Harbor,” the tenth and final episode of Season 2, opens with Innie Mark at the Damona Birthing Retreat. He has not completed the Cold Harbor file, which means Gemma—known on the severed floor as Ms. Casey—is still alive. Harmony Cobel and Devon tell him she can be rescued. Mark already knows a route toward Lumon’s Testing Floor from Irving’s drawings.

The two Marks confront what the rescue will cost
The plan raises a question that Outie Mark’s mission cannot answer on its own: what happens to the innies if Lumon is destroyed? Innie Mark is not simply a tool to be switched on for a rescue. His life inside Lumon is the life he knows, and he fears losing it.
Cobel and Devon arrange a recorded exchange between the innie and outie. Outie Mark apologizes for creating Innie Mark as a prisoner and asks for his help. They negotiate across the divide between them: Outie Mark wants to find his wife, while Innie Mark has his own interests and a real stake in whether he continues to exist.

Creator Dan Erickson, in an interview excerpt reproduced by Esquire’s finale recap, described the tension: “Hopefully, you’re rooting for Outie Mark to convince him because you want him to find his wife. But at the same time, you understand there’s always been this imbalance of power between them—and Innie Mark’s whole existence is literally being used by Outie Mark.”
Gemma’s Cold Harbor test
At Lumon, Helly faces Jame Eagan, who tells her he sees Kier in her. Later, during a company celebration led by Milchick, Mark completes the Cold Harbor file. The finale then shows what the work has meant for Gemma: her test requires her to dismantle a crib associated with the couple’s miscarriage while Dr. Mauer and Jame observe. The severance barrier appears to keep her from feeling the emotional connection the scene would ordinarily carry.

The escape and the final choice
Mark reaches the Exports Hall while Helly diverts Milchick. As they separate, they say, “See you at the Equator.” Mark makes it to the Testing Floor and finds Gemma. She reaches the exit stairwell and leaves Lumon.
Innie Mark does not follow her outside. He turns back toward Helly, and the season ends with the two innies together inside Lumon.

Why does Mark stay with Helly?
The finale frames Innie Mark’s decision as more than a simple choice between Lumon and freedom. He has just made Outie Mark reckon with the innie’s personhood and fear of erasure. Helping Gemma means acting on Outie Mark’s desire to reunite with his wife; leaving with Gemma could mean abandoning the life Innie Mark has built and the person he cares about inside.
His turn back toward Helly gives immediate weight to that choice: he chooses a relationship and continued existence as he understands them over following Gemma out. The episode does not settle what will happen to the innies, whether Mark can reintegrate, or whether his decision can last beyond this moment.

What does “See you at the Equator” mean?
In the scene, the phrase is a farewell as Mark and Helly split up during the escape plan: Mark heads toward the Exports Hall, while Helly stays behind to help him. Its clearest meaning is therefore personal and immediate—a goodbye at the boundary between their diverging routes.
The finale does not confirm that “the Equator” names a particular place, state of mind, or future plot clue. It is fair to read the phrase as carrying extra resonance in a story about divided lives, but a more specific explanation remains unresolved.
Does Gemma escape Lumon?
Yes. Gemma reaches the exit stairwell and leaves Lumon. The ending separates her escape from Innie Mark’s outcome: he stays behind and turns back to Helly. The episode does not show what happens next to Gemma or establish how she and Outie Mark will reunite.
Where to discuss the finale
The Ringer’s Prestige TV Podcast episode on the Season 2 finale, published March 21, 2025, runs 1 hour and 16 minutes. Hosts Joanna Robinson and Rob Mahoney discuss Mark’s relationship with his innie, the Lumon painting, and the closing sequence with Mark, Gemma, and Helly.
