What happened to Nancy Campbell-Panitz?
In May 2000, Nancy Campbell-Panitz appeared on a taped episode of The Jerry Springer Show with her former husband, Ralf Panitz, and his current wife, Eleanor. The episode, reported as “Secret Mistresses Confronted,” aired on July 24, 2000. Nancy was found dead that day. CBS/AP and The Washington Post reported on the episode and its aftermath.
Ralf Panitz was convicted of second-degree murder in March 2002. That conviction established his criminal responsibility for Nancy’s death; it did not determine whether Springer or the television program was civilly liable. CBS/AP covered the conviction, as did the Los Angeles Times.
What did the lawsuit against Springer allege?
Nancy’s son sued Springer and the show in July 2002. Contemporary reporting attributed to the complaint the allegation that the episode created “a mood that led to murder.” That was the plaintiff’s claim—not a court’s finding that the program caused the killing. The Irish Examiner reported the filing and the allegation.

Reporting by The Washington Post, drawing on investigative records, said Nancy believed the appearance would lead to reconciliation. It also reported Eleanor’s account that producers wanted “yelling and screaming” and for participants to “lunge at each other.” Those are attributed accounts of what participants believed or told investigators, not judicial findings and not proof of legal causation. The Washington Post’s report provides that context.
How was the Springer lawsuit resolved?
A later retrospective account says the estate dropped its monetary claims and that the show waived potential malicious-prosecution claims against the estate’s personal representative and counsel. The available reporting does not establish that a court decided the case’s merits or that the estate received a monetary settlement. AOL’s retrospective report describes the claims resolution.

That distinction matters: a claim being withdrawn or otherwise resolved is not the same as a judge or jury finding the defendants not liable. The reporting supports saying the lawsuit did not produce a documented merits ruling against the show; it does not support saying the show “won” in court or was judicially exonerated.

No. Scott Amedure appeared on The Jenny Jones Show in 1995 and was later killed by Jonathan Schmitz. Amedure’s family sued entities involved in that program. A jury award in the wrongful-death case was reversed by the Michigan Court of Appeals in 2002. The appellate court held the defendants had no duty to anticipate and prevent Schmitz’s murder three days after the taping and away from the studio. The Los Angeles Times and UPI reported the reversal.

The Amedure ruling is a comparison about a television production’s responsibility for a third party’s later crime, not a ruling in the Springer case. The cases involved different programs, defendants, facts and legal outcomes: the Jenny Jones jury award was reversed on appeal, while the Springer estate’s claims were reportedly dropped without a documented merits judgment.
