A portion of Gene Roddenberry’s cremated remains is aboard Celestis’s Enterprise Flight payload, which launched on January 8, 2024, and entered a stable orbit around the Sun, according to the U.S. Space Force. Celestis says the flight traveled beyond the Earth-Moon system. It is this 2024 memorial flight—not the earlier Earth-orbit capsule—that explains why Roddenberry’s remains are described as drifting through space.
Where are Gene Roddenberry’s ashes now?
There is no single answer for all of Roddenberry’s remains: separate portions were carried on three different flights. The portion aboard Celestis’s 2024 Enterprise Flight payload is in solar orbit, the destination-level description given by the U.S. Space Force. Celestis describes the flight as traveling beyond the Earth-Moon system. The available accounts do not provide live coordinates or precise orbital elements, so a more exact current location cannot be stated.
The 2024 payload launched aboard United Launch Alliance’s first Vulcan rocket on January 8. The U.S. Space Force says it entered a stable solar orbit; Celestis lists the flight as successfully launched. United Launch Alliance’s launch announcement and the Celestis Enterprise Flight page describe the mission and its outcome.
How the three flights differed
| Year and flight | What carried the remains | Destination and significance |
|---|---|---|
| 1992: Space Shuttle Columbia | A portion of Roddenberry’s remains, reported by the Los Angeles Times | Carried aboard a shuttle mission. This was separate from both Celestis flights and does not establish the present solar-orbit claim. |
| 1997: Celestis Founders Flight | A memorial capsule carrying a portion of his remains, among 24 participants identified by Celestis | Entered Earth orbit; contemporary accounts said the capsules were expected to return through atmospheric reentry. |
| 2024: Celestis Enterprise Flight | A portion of his cremated remains in the mission payload | Entered stable solar orbit, beyond the Earth-Moon system according to Celestis. This is the flight that supports the present-tense description. |
The 1992 shuttle flight
A portion of Roddenberry’s remains traveled on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1992, according to a contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report. That earlier shuttle flight should not be confused with the later Celestis missions.

The 1997 Earth-orbit memorial
Celestis says its Founders Flight launched on April 21, 1997, carrying 24 participants, including Roddenberry. A Los Angeles Times report published the following day also identified his capsule among the remains sent into orbit. This was an Earth-orbit flight, not the solar-orbit mission cited today. Contemporary reporting said the capsules would eventually reenter Earth’s atmosphere; a NASA-hosted chronology containing archived press excerpts provides context for that era. Celestis’s account of the mission is on its company history page.
The 2024 solar-orbit mission
The Enterprise Flight was launched by ULA’s Vulcan Cert-1 on January 8, 2024. The U.S. Space Force identifies the payload as having entered stable solar orbit, while Celestis describes it as traveling beyond the Earth-Moon system. Those descriptions establish its broad destination, but not a live position that can be tracked from the sources cited here.

Why Gene and Majel Roddenberry flew together
Celestis co-founder and CEO Charles M. Chafer said the 2024 mission fulfilled a promise he made to Majel Barrett Roddenberry in 1997 to fly her and her husband together on a deep-space memorial flight. In a ULA announcement published January 26, 2022, Chafer said: “We’re very pleased to be fulfilling, with this mission, a promise I made to Majel Barrett Roddenberry in 1997 that one day we would fly her and husband Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry together on a deep space memorial spaceflight.” The statement is attributed to Chafer in ULA’s announcement.

In this context, the phrase refers to the 2024 Enterprise Flight payload’s solar orbit. It does not mean every portion of Roddenberry’s cremated remains is in space, nor does it mean that the 1997 capsule is still circling Earth. The evidence supports describing the 2024 payload as being in solar orbit; it does not establish exact current coordinates, orbital period, or capsule mass.
