The exact title has not been verified as the official name of a separate program. Villa Fatumbi includes São Paulo-based organizations, but it is a network of independent partners—not one residency with a single application, deadline, or package of support.
What is Villa Fatumbi?
Villa Fatumbi — Arquipélago Cultural Transatlântico is an Embassy of France in Brazil initiative connecting artists, cultural institutions, festivals, and cultural organizations in France, Brazil, and parts of Africa, including Benin and Côte d’Ivoire. Its stated aims are to support artistic creation through residencies, encourage international co-creation and co-production, connect cultural professionals through collaboration and training, and help artistic works and ideas circulate across participating territories.
The network describes itself as a decentralized “archipelago”: member organizations retain their autonomy while sharing a common vision. The official page lists 25 members, a count that may change and should be treated as the figure shown on that page, not an independently verified total.
Which organizations connect it to São Paulo?
The official member list includes Pivô and SESC São Paulo. Pivô is an artistic exchange and experimentation platform operating in São Paulo and Salvador. Its activities include exhibitions, commissioned projects, residencies, publications, and public programming. SESC São Paulo offers cultural programming and artist residences that include accommodation and workspaces. These descriptions do not establish that every residency or opportunity is open at all times; check each host’s current notice for details.
Villa Fatumbi is not limited to São Paulo. Its member organizations span Brazil, France, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire, so opportunities, locations, and partners depend on the specific project or host.
How artists apply
Artists do not apply directly to the French Embassy for a Villa Fatumbi residency. They apply to an individual participating residency through that host’s call, using its calendar and selection criteria.

- Find a participating host and a relevant opportunity. Start with the Villa Fatumbi program page and identify the residency or partner that fits your project.
- Read the host’s current call in full. Confirm eligibility, discipline or project requirements, deadline, duration, application materials, and any expectations for collaboration or public presentation.
- Verify the practical terms with the host. The network overview does not set a common grant amount or guarantee travel, accommodation, workspace, or other support across all residencies.
- Submit through the channel named in that call. Follow the host’s instructions rather than sending an artist application to the Embassy.
Calls are time-sensitive. The official page has listed opportunities such as a Sacatar 2027 call and a Museu da Língua Portuguesa × Cité internationale de la langue française 2027 residency, while placing other calls in an archive, including a Usina de Arte × Galerie Paradise 2026 residency. Listings and deadlines can change; confirm that a specific call is open before applying.
How cultural organizations can propose a project
Cultural institutions, festivals, and cultural structures can submit a project idea through the program’s contact form. The program says proposals are considered throughout the year for relevance and alignment with its goals. This is a route for organizational proposals, not a substitute for an artist’s application to a residency call.

Villa Fatumbi does not offer one standardized residency package. Its FAQ says duration depends on the host residency, the project, partners, and available resources. Before deciding whether an opportunity fits, compare the specific call’s:
- Host organization, location, and project or discipline fit
- Eligibility rules and application deadline
- Residency duration and schedule
- Workspace, accommodation, funding, and other material support
- Partner commitments and opportunities for collaboration or public presentation
Do not assume a universal eligibility rule, application window, grant, or length of stay from the network’s overview. Those terms belong to each host’s current call.

Is this the same as São Paulo’s ProAC exchange grant?
No equivalence is established. A São Paulo state notice published on 14 November 2024 documents a separate ProAC technical-artistic exchange grant call; it is historical context for public support of international exchange, not evidence that ProAC and Villa Fatumbi are the same program. The notice is available from the Diário Oficial do Estado de São Paulo. Its 2024 terms should not be treated as current application guidance.
