No. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) no ha declarado que estar soltero sea una discapacidad. La afirmación mezcla tres conceptos distintos: el estado civil o de pareja, la infertilidad como condición clínica y el acceso a servicios de fertilidad.
Qué dice realmente la OMS sobre la infertilidad
La OMS define la infertilidad como una enfermedad del sistema reproductivo. Su criterio clínico habitual es no lograr un embarazo después de 12 meses o más de relaciones sexuales regulares sin protección. La definición y la información sobre quién puede necesitar atención aparecen en la ficha de la OMS sobre infertilidad, actualizada el 28 de noviembre de 2025.
La misma ficha señala que personas que no mantienen relaciones sexuales también pueden necesitar manejo de la infertilidad y servicios de fertilidad. Eso describe posibles necesidades de atención; no convierte la soltería en un diagnóstico, una enfermedad ni una discapacidad.
Por qué se confundió la atención de fertilidad con la soltería
En 2020, la OMS aclaró que no había cambiado su uso de la definición clínica de infertilidad. También explicó que esa definición no establece recomendaciones sobre la prestación de servicios de fertilidad. La aclaración de la OMS, publicada el 4 de febrero de 2020, distingue así entre definir una condición clínica y decidir quién puede acceder a servicios.

Que alguien sin pareja sexual pueda necesitar o buscar atención de fertilidad no significa que su estado de pareja haya sido reclasificado. La afirmación viral da ese salto sin respaldo.
Qué significa discapacidad en la definición de la OMS
La ficha de la OMS/Europa describe la discapacidad como el resultado de la interacción entre una condición de salud o deficiencia y factores ambientales y personales, como las actitudes sociales, una infraestructura inaccesible o políticas discriminatorias. Africa Check rastreó la frase «being single at the age of 30s is a disability» hasta un artículo de JTV publicado en 2019. En su verificación del 28 de octubre de ese año, señaló que el texto no nombraba el estudio que supuestamente respaldaba el titular ni establecía un límite de edad. La cifra sobre infertilidad no mide la soltería
En 2023, la OMS estimó que una de cada seis personas de edad reproductiva experimenta infertilidad a lo largo de su vida. Esa estadística se refiere a infertilidad, no a estar soltero ni a discapacidad. No permite inferir cuántas personas solteras hay, ni que la soltería sea una condición médica. La estimación figura en el comunicado de la OMS del 4 de abril de 2023.
