Carl Reiner’s reported clash with CBS concerned a scene in The New Dick Van Dyke Show: a daughter opens her parents’ bedroom door while they are making love. CBS Standards & Practices rejected the scene, and a 1974 trade report said the network’s rationale was that it did not fit the expectations of the show’s audience. The story is documented in archival interview listings and contemporary reporting, though the popular headline’s exact anger quote and its book attribution are not independently confirmed by the primary materials available here.
What was Carl Reiner’s dispute with CBS?
Reiner’s reported disagreement with the network was over a first script he wrote for The New Dick Van Dyke Show. As recounted by The Forward, the scene had the daughter open her parents’ bedroom door while they were making love. The moment was off camera; the conflict was about whether the situation itself could appear on the program.

The Television Academy’s oral-history topic index separately lists Carl Reiner interview clips about problems and difficulty with Standards & Practices on the episode. That archival index supports the existence of a dispute, but it does not, by itself, establish the final version of the episode or what viewers ultimately saw.
Why did CBS reject the scene?
A 1974 report in Broadcasting said CBS defended its decision on the basis that the scene did not meet the expectations of the audience that tuned in to the Van Dyke program. The report is evidence of the network’s stated rationale, not a verified quotation from a named CBS executive. It is best understood as a judgment about the show’s audience and standards, rather than as a documented episode-specific audience measurement.
#1 Best Overall
The disagreement reflects a familiar tension in television: a writer’s view of what a scene can imply without showing, set against a network’s assessment of what is appropriate for a particular program and its audience. Reiner was reportedly angry and wanted greater creative freedom, while CBS applied its Standards & Practices review.
What is known about Dick Van Dyke’s role in the story?
A later Headline Society article says Van Dyke discussed the incident in his book 100 Rules for Living to 100. That book connection has not been independently confirmed against the book or a recording here, so it should be treated as the article’s attribution rather than a verified citation. The headline phrase “Still Gets Me Fuming Today” is likewise not established as Van Dyke’s verbatim words.

The careful distinction is between the underlying reported dispute, which is supported by Reiner-related archival listings and contemporary trade coverage, and the later framing about Van Dyke’s exact remarks, which remains unverified.

- It does not establish the episode’s airdate, whether the scene was filmed, or what version ultimately aired.
- It does not establish a specific audience figure or a broader episode theme involving a family crisis or abortion.
- It does not verify the exact wording of either Reiner’s or Van Dyke’s remarks beyond the reporting described above.
