Coldplay’s fifth Glastonbury headline set had the ingredients of a triumphant spectacle: a rapid run of familiar hits, a field of illuminated wristbands and fireworks. But the guest-heavy middle and a finale that one reviewer found ill-judged made the night feel uneven as well as exhilarating. That contrast—not a lack of craft—is what makes the performance so striking in the reviews.
What happened at Glastonbury 2024?
Coldplay headlined the Pyramid Stage on Saturday 29 June 2024. The festival’s official 2024 lineup confirms the slot. In its announcement for the broadcast, BBC Studios described the show as the band’s fifth Glastonbury headline appearance, and the first since 2016. It called Coldplay the first act to headline the festival five times; that is the record claim BBC Studios made at the time, not a claim about all later festival history.
The broadcast announcement also said the set would be livestreamed globally. BBC Studios chief commercial officer Tara Maitra called Glastonbury “an icon of British culture” and said the livestream would give fans around the world a “front row seat” to headline performances.
Why the opening worked
Rolling Stone UK’s review describes a brisk opening sequence: “Yellow” led into “Adventure of a Lifetime,” followed by “The Scientist,” “Paradise” and “Clocks.” The Guardian likewise characterizes the set as hit-heavy, also naming “Viva La Vida” and “Higher Power.” Starting with songs many listeners already knew gave the performance immediate momentum; the reviews’ accounts suggest a show built to connect quickly with the large Pyramid Stage crowd.

The visual scale reinforced that effect. Rolling Stone UK praised the light-up wristbands spread across the field, turning the audience into part of the spectacle. The production’s strength was not only the size of its lights and fireworks, but how it made individual crowd members and the whole field part of the show.
Where the guest section changed the pace
The middle brought a broad set of collaborators onto the stage. The Guardian reports Laura Mvula singing “Violet Hill,” Little Simz appearing on “And So We Pray,” and Femi Kuti and Elyanna joining “Arabesque.” Rolling Stone UK also names Victoria Canal among the guests and reports that Michael J. Fox joined the band on guitar for “Fix You.” The published accounts do not give identical guest lists or song pairings, so those details are best read as each review’s reported moments rather than one exhaustive set list.

The guest appearances added variety and created opportunities for musical exchange, but they also interrupted the hit-driven momentum of the opening. Rolling Stone UK argued that the section slowed the show and that several guests were not introduced clearly enough for people watching from a distance. A collaboration can be compelling onstage yet harder to follow at festival scale when viewers cannot readily tell who has joined the performance or why.
How the spectacle met the sentiment
Coldplay’s crowd engagement was part of the staging, not a break from it. Rolling Stone UK recounts Chris Martin asking the audience to put away their phones during “A Sky Full of Stars,” which reached its climax with fireworks. The Guardian also describes cameras finding individual audience members and fireworks accompanying a collective message of love. Together, these moments show the show moving between enormous visual cues and intimate appeals to the crowd.

That earnestness is also where the reviews’ praise meets their reservations. The staging made the songs feel communal, but the appeals and sentimental gestures could strike some viewers as overdone. Rolling Stone UK captured the tension in its assessment: “Their stunning light show and arsenal of hits are never in doubt, but hackneyed platitudes and uneven pacing hamper the band’s fifth time atop the Pyramid Stage.” That is one critic’s verdict, not a consensus shared by every account.
Why the ending divided the impression
For Rolling Stone UK’s reviewer, “Fix You” was the emotional peak. The review then questioned the decision to close with the newer “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” describing fans beginning to leave as the song played. The Guardian also notes a finale that leaned into crowd interaction and sentimentality, though that description does not establish that all viewers reacted the same way.

Ending on a recent song rather than another familiar anthem can make sense as a statement about a band’s present, but it may not deliver the release that a festival audience expects after a set built around hits. In the critical account, the choice left the performance with an awkward aftertaste: the emotional high arrived before the actual last song.

Coldplay’s Glastonbury 2024 performance comes across in these reviews as both highly accomplished and occasionally strange in its choices. The opening hits, illuminated wristbands and fireworks supplied the scale and immediacy of a major headline show. The guest section broadened the sound but, in Rolling Stone UK’s view, disrupted the pace; the emotional appeals and closing song did not land equally well for every critic.

“Brilliant and bizarre” fits that push and pull: brilliant in its crowd-facing craft and spectacle, bizarre in the detours and finale that kept the show from feeling seamless. The evidence supports a mixed critical impression, not a universal audience verdict.
