Katy Perry’s April 14, 2025 flight aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard drew jokes about its brief duration and celebrity spectacle, alongside criticism of the resources used and the way the trip was framed as a women’s empowerment milestone. Those reactions were documented examples, not a measure of what all viewers thought.
What happened on Katy Perry’s Blue Origin flight?
Perry flew with five other women aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket on April 14, 2025. Futurism described the mission as an 11-minute flight that reached the edge of the Kármán line. TheWrap reported that Blue Origin characterized the crew as the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963.
The reported participants were Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn. The FADER reported that Perry sang “What A Wonderful World” during the flight.
Why did the flight become a target for jokes?
The short flight and celebrity spectacle
Some of the jokes focused on how brief the trip was and on the contrast between its high-profile presentation and short duration. TheWrap noted jokes that Perry should have sung her hit “E.T.” and highlighted humor about the length of the flight. Other reactions mocked the celebrity spectacle itself.

Questions about resources and the empowerment framing
Some critics questioned the resources used for a short private flight, as well as the presentation of the event as a milestone for women. The FADER quoted model and actor Emily Ratajkowski asking: “Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space. For what? What was the marketing there?”
The FADER also reported that Wendy’s responded to Perry’s return with the post “Can we send her back.” A user in the Associated Press livestream chat was quoted by Futurism saying, “People are dying, Gayle.” Futurism did not identify that user.

How did Perry and Gayle King respond?
Futurism reported that Perry said after landing, “I feel super connected to love,” and added, “I think this experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you, like, how much love you have to give.”
King defended the experience in an interview, saying: “What happened to us was not a ‘ride,’ this was a bonafide freakin’ flight.” She also described seeing Earth as prompting reflection on how people should treat one another. These comments convey the participants’ experience; they do not resolve critics’ objections about resource use or the event’s marketing.

The articles provide selected examples, not a representative poll or a quantified measure of how widely those views were held. “Relentlessly mocks” describes the focus of one article’s coverage, not a demonstrated consensus among viewers.
