Their goodbye is uneasy, not a full reconciliation: they remain connected, but the trip has not resolved the strain between them. The film leaves Benji’s next step—and the state of his distress—open.
What happens at the end of A Real Pain?
After the tour, David’s family welcomes him home, while Benji is left alone at the airport. The contrast suggests how differently their lives are arranged: David has a family life to return to, while Benji’s future is not shown. The film does not say that David has abandoned his cousin, nor does it confirm that they will never reconnect. It ends on a separation whose meaning remains uncertain.

The Associated Press describes the farewell as uneasy, and The Atlantic’s reading of the closing image emphasizes Benji’s face and the unresolved dynamic the journey has brought into focus. Those are interpretations of the ending, not proof of what either cousin will do next.
Why does Benji stay at the airport?
The film leaves Benji’s next move unstated. He is alone after David leaves, but the scene does not explain whether he plans to travel, wait, or go somewhere else. Treating his isolation as evidence of a specific decision—or as a prediction about his future—would go beyond what the ending shows.
#1 Best Overall
- Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple?s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
What does the goodbye reveal about David and Benji?
The cousins still have a bond strong enough to bring them on the trip and make their parting emotionally charged. But affection coexists with frustration. David has described Benji as someone who can “light up a room” and then damage the mood; he also tells the group that Benji attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills six months earlier. That history makes David’s concern significant, but the final scene is not a diagnosis or a guarantee of recovery.
Their connection is also unequal in ways each may resent. Benji can resent David’s stability while relying on him; David can envy Benji’s ease with people even as he struggles with anxiety. As The Atlantic notes, the trip foregrounds their interdependence and mutual incomprehension. The ending supports neither a permanent break nor a complete repair.

How does the Poland trip shape the ending?
David and Benji are cousins traveling through Poland to honor their recently deceased grandmother. The historical sites they visit do not provide an easy cure for their personal pain. Instead, the film places their feelings alongside the suffering of their ancestors without declaring that one makes the other invalid.
Writer-director Jesse Eisenberg told TIME that he wanted to tell a story about characters with “ambivalent feelings about history” and about their own pain in relation to their ancestors’ pain. He connected that idea to his own confusion when visiting his great-aunt’s former home in Poland and trying, unsuccessfully, to feel something. That context makes the unresolved farewell consistent with the film’s refusal to offer a simple lesson or emotional resolution.
What the ending does—and does not—confirm
- It shows: David and Benji part at the airport after the trip, and the goodbye is uneasy.
- It suggests: their bond and concern for one another persist alongside friction, dependence, and differences in their lives.
- It does not confirm: that Benji will be all right, that David has cut him off, or that the cousins have fully reconciled.
A Real Pain was written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who plays David; Kieran Culkin plays Benji. The story’s final image leaves their relationship intact but unsettled.
