Boota Singh was buried at Miani Sahib, a large graveyard in Lahore, after his reported wish to be buried in Nurpur was refused. His grave later became associated with the name Shaheed-e-Mohabbat, or “martyr of love.” The story behind that reputation, however, is a contested account shaped by Partition, state efforts to return separated women, and a record that leaves Zainab’s own perspective largely unheard.
How Boota Singh and Zainab were separated
In a 2017 account for Scroll.in, journalist Haroon Khalid identifies Boota Singh as a resident of Ludhiana district in East Punjab. Khalid reports that during Partition violence Singh saved Zainab, a young Muslim girl separated from her family. The account says they married and had two daughters, Tanveer and Dilveer Kaur.
After Partition, authorities took Zainab and the younger daughter to Pakistan as part of the effort to recover and return women separated from their families. Khalid says Zainab’s family had settled in Nurpur, near Lahore. These events belong to a wider history of state intervention and family claims after Partition; they cannot be reduced to a simple tale of two lovers separated by a border.
Khalid reports that Singh went to Delhi with his older daughter to seek Zainab’s return, converted to Islam and took the name Jamil Ahmad, then crossed into Pakistan. The details are not uniform across accounts. In The Other Side of Silence: Voices from India’s Partition, Urvashi Butalia notes that versions of the story differ, including how Zainab was separated and the route Singh took to Pakistan. It is safer to treat these as reported episodes than to combine differing versions into one certain chronology.

Khalid says Zainab’s family handed Singh over to state authorities after beating him, and that legal proceedings followed. At the Lahore High Court, according to Khalid, Zainab refused to return to Singh and asked that the younger daughter be taken from her. The account mentions speculation that family pressure influenced her testimony, but does not establish that as fact.
A recorded refusal is important, but it does not reveal the full circumstances in which Zainab spoke or establish her private feelings. Butalia describes Zainab as surrounded by relatives when she rejected Singh and reflects on how difficult it is to recover her perspective. Butalia’s sentence, “I could not recover her voice,” is her own reflection on the limits of the record—not a quotation from Zainab.
Why Singh was buried at Miani Sahib
Khalid reports that Singh died by suicide after the court outcome and that his last wish was to be buried in Nurpur. Zainab’s family reportedly refused that request. Singh was instead buried at Miani Sahib, Lahore’s oldest graveyard, as Khalid describes it.
In the 2017 article, Khalid gives Miani Sahib’s area as 1,000 kanals (125 acres) and its grave count as an estimated more than 300,000. Those are figures reported at that time, not current audited measurements. Khalid and his guide, Iqbal Qaiser, had difficulty locating Singh’s grave. Qaiser reportedly tried asking, “Do you know where Jamil Ahmad is buried?”—a name that connected the grave to Singh’s later life in Pakistan.

Khalid says the grave was made of mud and became a place of pilgrimage for young lovers, while Singh acquired the popular title Shaheed-e-Mohabbat (“martyr of love”). Supporters reportedly tried repeatedly to rebuild the mud grave, while opponents destroyed it. Khalid’s account says it remained a mud grave and that no brick shrine was ultimately built.
The same report quotes an unnamed cemetery custodian saying that mud graves may last “about 50 years to 60 years,” depending on conditions and visitors. That is the custodian’s attributed observation, not a general rule for graves or confirmation of the grave’s present condition. The 2017 article does not provide current coordinates or a verified account of its condition today.

The story reached a wider audience through the 1999 Punjabi film Shaheed-e-Mohabbat, starring Gurdas Mann and Divya Dutta. Khalid reports that it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi at India’s 46th National Film Awards. This is a claim made in Khalid’s article; an official award record was not independently established here.
Film and popular retellings have helped make Singh’s grave a symbol of tragic devotion. Butalia’s account cautions against treating that legend as proof that Zainab loved Singh or freely chose the life attributed to her. The available accounts differ, and the surviving narrative offers limited access to her own words. Holding that uncertainty in view makes the story less tidy, but more honest to the people whose lives it describes.
