The best erotic movies of the past 25 years make desire part of the story, not merely something shown on screen. This ranked selection covers films first released from 2001 through 2026, using first festival or theatrical release where applicable; a film’s later release in another market does not reset its place in the window. The ranking weighs how desire shapes character and conflict, the film’s craft and emotional effect, whose perspective it centers, and how it handles consent and power. Suggestion can be as erotic as explicit depiction, so nudity is not a measure of rank.
How this ranking works
“Erotic” describes a range of cinematic approaches: longing, flirtation, voyeurism, sensual atmosphere, and explicit sex can all contribute. These films are ranked for the role desire plays in their stories and style, not for how much they reveal. The list includes romance, psychological drama, and erotic thrillers, with attention to queer desire and women’s perspectives as well as seduction plots.
This is an editorial ranking, not a claim of objective consensus. A different yardstick produces a different list: Rotten Tomatoes’ 200-title guide, updated February 11, 2026, requires at least 20 reviews and orders films by Tomatometer score. Its ranking spans film history and is not limited to the 2001–2026 window used here.
The 10 best erotic movies of the past 25 years
1. In the Mood for Love (2000)
Wong Kar-wai’s film is a defining portrait of desire kept just out of reach: two neighbors suspect their spouses are having an affair and grow close without consummating their own attraction. Repeated encounters, restrained performances, color, music, and the charged space between the characters make it sensual without relying on nudity or sex. TIME includes it among sexy films despite its lack of either, pointing to the force of unfulfilled desire and visual atmosphere (TIME).

#1 Best Overall
- A film by legendary cult director Jesús “Jess” Franco (The Diabolical Dr. Z, The Blood of Fu Manchu, Venus in Furs, Count Dracula, Lorna… the Exorcist)
Release-window note: Its original release was in 2000, so it falls outside a strict 2001–2026 window. It is included here as a useful boundary case, not as an eligible ranked entry.
1. Y Tu Mamá También (2001)
Alfonso Cuarón’s road movie follows two teenage friends and an older woman on a trip through Mexico. Its sexual candor is inseparable from a story about friendship, class, grief, and changing attraction. TIME highlights the film’s realistic intimacy and fluid treatment of sexuality (TIME). The result is less a seduction fantasy than a frank, unsettled account of how desire exposes what the characters do not know about themselves.
Rank #2
- 4-Disc Collector's Edition
2. Secretary (2002)
Steven Shainberg’s drama centers on a young woman who enters a BDSM relationship with her boss. It takes desire seriously as part of a character’s search for agency, but the workplace hierarchy complicates any easy reading of the relationship as a model of consent. TIME describes the film’s power dynamic as potentially empowering over the course of its story (TIME). Its appeal lies in that tension: kink is neither a punchline nor a shortcut to intimacy, and the characters’ choices remain bound up with vulnerability and control.
3. Swimming Pool (2003)
François Ozon’s sunlit thriller turns watching into a source of unease. An English crime writer spending time at a French country house becomes fascinated by the younger woman who arrives there, and the film keeps desire, invention, and reality in unstable balance. TIME singles out its voyeurism, tension, and ambiguity (TIME). Its erotic charge comes less from certainty about what happened than from the shifting power of looking and being looked at.

4. Lust, Caution (2007)
Ang Lee’s wartime espionage drama makes seduction part of an assassination scheme. A young resistance operative is assigned to get close to a powerful collaborator, and intimacy becomes both a tactic and a danger. TIME describes the film as an espionage story in which seduction serves the plot (TIME). Its erotic scenes are deliberately difficult to separate from the characters’ competing roles, risks, and calculations.
5. Shame (2011)
Steve McQueen’s drama follows a New York man whose sexual compulsion has narrowed his life and strained his relationship with his sister. Its controlled style and emotional distance make the subject feel isolating rather than glamorous. The film’s release year can vary by market: it opened in the United States in 2011 and is sometimes listed as a 2012 release elsewhere. Its depiction of compulsion and distress makes it a demanding watch, not a conventional erotic romance.

6. Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013)
Abdellatif Kechiche’s drama traces a young woman’s first great relationship with another woman, from intense early attraction through the pressures that pull the couple apart. Its explicit scenes drew controversy, but controversy alone is not evidence of artistic merit; the film’s place here rests on its sustained attention to desire, intimacy, and heartbreak. The characters are adolescents and young adults over the course of the story; they should not be conflated with the performers, whose ages are distinct from their characters’ ages.
7. Nymphomaniac (2013)
Lars von Trier’s two-part film frames a woman’s account of her sexual history as an extended, sometimes abrasive conversation about appetite, shame, and self-judgment. It is deliberately provocative and often more interested in argument than sensual pleasure. Different cuts and editions contain different material, so the title alone does not identify a single version; viewers should check which cut is being offered rather than assuming all releases are identical.

8. The Handmaiden (2016)
Park Chan-wook’s thriller, set in 1930s Korea, builds its story around deception, inheritance, and a growing attraction between two women. Its shifting points of view repeatedly alter what the audience understands about power and motive. Sexuality is central to the plot, but so are the characters’ efforts to escape the roles imposed on them. The film’s elaborate visual style makes seduction and suspense work together rather than compete.
9. Fair Play (2023)
Chloe Domont’s relationship thriller begins with a couple’s private intimacy and then tests it against competition at a finance firm where they both work. When one partner advances, professional ambition and romantic loyalty become entangled. TIME notes that the film opens with a provocative sex scene and describes its central workplace rivalry (TIME). Its erotic tension comes from the collision between private desire and the couple’s changing balance of status.
10. Passages (2023)
Ira Sachs’s love-triangle drama follows the fallout when a married filmmaker begins a relationship with a younger man. Its candid depiction of queer sex is part of a broader story about selfishness, attachment, and the unequal costs of a person’s choices. In the United States, the film received an NC-17 rating. TIME reported disagreement over how that rating related to a long queer sex scene (TIME); the rating itself should not be treated as a verdict on the film’s artistic value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing by mood: sensual, explicit, or suspenseful
- For sensuality without explicit sex: In the Mood for Love (outside the strict window) is built on restraint and unconsummated longing. Within the window, Swimming Pool uses atmosphere and voyeurism to create its tension.
- For erotic thrillers: Swimming Pool, Lust, Caution, and The Handmaiden make desire part of a larger game of concealment, danger, or control.
- For queer love stories: Blue Is the Warmest Color and Passages explore queer relationships in very different registers: one follows a relationship across years; the other focuses on an unstable love triangle.
- For stories about power and agency: Secretary explores a BDSM relationship shaped by a workplace hierarchy, while Fair Play turns a shared workplace into a pressure point in a couple’s relationship.
- For difficult portrayals of sexual compulsion: Shame and Nymphomaniac are more concerned with distress, self-understanding, or provocation than with uncomplicated erotic pleasure.
What an NC-17 rating means in the United States
The Motion Picture Association says an NC-17 film is one that, in the Rating Board’s view, most parents would consider patently too adult for children 17 and under. The MPA also says NC-17 does not mean “obscene” or “pornographic”; sex is only one possible basis for the rating, alongside violence, aberrant behavior, drug abuse, or other content (MPA film ratings, page displayed October 17, 2022). This is U.S. guidance; other territories have their own classification systems.
