John Van Beek was eliminated from Australian Idol on Monday, 24 March 2025, while fellow Perth contestant Gisella Colletti advanced to the top six. The result followed Sunday performances of Justin Bieber’s “Ghost” by Van Beek and Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” by Colletti, with viewers having chosen the contestants’ songs.
Van Beek misses out as Colletti advances
PerthNow reported on 25 March 2025 that Van Beek, a 19-year-old Western Australian contestant at the time, was eliminated alongside Canberra contestant Emma Jones. Colletti, a 16-year-old Corpus Christi College student at the time, progressed to the top six. The ages reflect the report’s descriptions in March 2025, not their current ages.
The two Perth-area contestants had performed on Sunday, with Australia choosing the songs for that round. Van Beek sang Justin Bieber’s “Ghost”; Colletti performed Ariana Grande’s “Break Free.” Their differing outcomes—not published vote totals or a technical comparison of their performances—are the basis for the contrast that night.
What Van Beek and Colletti said after the result
Speaking to The West Australian after his elimination, as quoted by PerthNow, Van Beek called the experience “a massive ride.” He said he had not expected much when he entered the competition, but that it had “really taken me on a ride.” He also praised Colletti’s progress: “Seeing Gisella get through was just so amazing, she fully deserves it.”

Colletti described herself as “overwhelmed, excited and probably a little sad” after Van Beek’s departure. She said she wanted to show more of herself in the competition and “make Perth proud and represent the people that we are.” She added: “Do it for John, do it for Hannah — do it for all the little kids who have the same dream as me.”

The result was a bittersweet one for the Perth contestants: Van Beek’s run ended, while Colletti continued in the competition, and both spoke warmly about the other. PerthNow’s report does not give vote totals or explain the precise elimination mechanism, and it does not cover the eventual season outcome.
