62 Years Later, This Is Still the Best Christmas Song of All Time

The Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride” stands out for its warm vocals, playful horse effects and rhythmic clip-clop—but “best of all time” remains a matter of taste.

The recording at the heart of this claim is The Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride,” released in 1963, according to a December 2025 Collider article. It is not an objectively established winner: “best Christmas song of all time” is a critical judgment. But the recording makes a persuasive case through a warm vocal sound, layered production, playful horse effects and a rhythmic clip-clop that gives the familiar seasonal scene momentum.

Which “Sleigh Ride” is the article about?

It is The Ronettes’ recording, not the composition in the abstract. The group’s official recording metadata identifies the track as “Sleigh Ride” and places it on A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector. That distinction matters: songs can have many recordings, and the claim concerns the character of this particular performance and arrangement.

The metadata credits Leroy Anderson as composer, Mitchell Parish as lyricist and Phil Spector as producer. Those credits identify who created and produced the recorded version; they do not, by themselves, establish when the track first appeared or whether it outranks other holiday songs.

Why does this recording make a case for “best”?

A vocal performance with warmth and playfulness

The Collider article describes the recording’s tone as warm and its delivery as playful. Those are critical assessments rather than measurable facts, but they point to the appeal: the song sounds festive without relying only on grand sentiment. Its buoyant vocal character helps make the ride feel light and inviting.

#1 Best Overall

An arrangement that creates motion

The same article singles out the horse sounds and the rhythmic clip-clop. Together, these details make the arrangement feel like a scene unfolding rather than a melody simply being sung. The production layers those cues into the performance, giving the track its own recognizable seasonal texture.

Familiarity without stillness

“Sleigh Ride” is built around an instantly legible winter outing, but the Ronettes’ recording keeps that image moving. The steady rhythmic feel and playful sound effects give the song energy, while its warm tone keeps that energy from becoming frantic. That balance is a strong reason listeners may return to this version.

What does “62 years later” mean?

The Collider article states that The Ronettes’ recording was released in 1963. Its “62 years later” framing fits the article’s publication on December 24, 2025. In 2026, that is 63 years after 1963; the 62-year phrase describes the original article’s timing, not a current count.

The Collider article also says Anderson composed “Sleigh Ride” in 1948 and that The Andrews Sisters recorded the first vocal version, with Parish’s lyrics, in 1950. Those historical details are reported there but are not independently established by the recording metadata. The metadata confirms the Ronettes’ credits and album association, not that broader chronology.

Is it really the best Christmas song of all time?

There is no verified all-time ranking in the available sources, and no objective measure can settle a claim like “best” without first defining what counts: songwriting, performance, arrangement, cultural reach or personal attachment. The case for The Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride” is therefore best understood as criticism, not a factual ranking. Its distinctive production and buoyant atmosphere make it a memorable contender, but they cannot prove universal superiority.

For the recording’s identity and credits, see The Ronettes’ official artist-channel recording page. For the 1963 date and the critical argument behind the claim, see Collider’s article syndicated by Headtopics.
