“Came from nothing” is too sweeping to apply to every famous entertainer with a difficult early life. The available evidence documents childhood poverty for Oprah Winfrey and Viola Davis; it describes family hardship and early work for Rihanna and Dolly Parton without establishing that either grew up in poverty. Those are four distinct profiles—not a verified list of ten—and hardship is not a ranking.
Why this is not a verified list of ten
A defensible list needs evidence for two separate claims about every person: what their childhood circumstances actually were, and whether they meet a consistent definition of “super-rich” now. The sources available here support four biographies, but do not establish ten names under those standards or provide comparable, current wealth evidence across the four. Rather than fill the gaps with assumptions, the profiles below distinguish documented poverty from other kinds of family difficulty.

Oprah Winfrey: poverty documented in rural Mississippi
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says Winfrey spent the first six years of her life in poverty in rural Mississippi, living with her grandmother in a home without indoor plumbing. The Academy of Achievement interview adds an important first-person nuance: Winfrey has said she did not necessarily understand her circumstances as poverty as a child. Her perspective and the material conditions described by the Academy can both be true.
Her career later moved through public speaking and early broadcasting into national television, production, media ownership, and philanthropy. Those achievements describe her career path; they do not, by themselves, establish a current wealth figure.

Viola Davis: childhood deprivation in Central Falls
In Netflix Tudum’s coverage of Davis’s 2022 conversation with Oprah, Davis described growing up poor in Central Falls, Rhode Island, amid food insecurity, cold winters, and housing insecurity. The account is connected to her memoir, Finding Me, and her decision to pursue acting. These are Davis’s reported experiences, not a universal explanation of how poverty shapes people’s lives.
In the conversation, Davis said: “I think that failure and hardship are interesting learning tools.” The line belongs to her account of her own life, not to a claim that hardship is necessary for success. Her memoir, Finding Me, offers her fuller account.

Rihanna: family difficulties, but poverty is not established here
The Guardian’s 2009 interview describes difficult family circumstances, her mother’s work, Rihanna caring for a younger brother, and the audition that led to a recording opportunity. That supports a story of family responsibility and an early opening in music; it does not establish that she grew up in poverty. Calling her childhood impoverished on the basis of this source would overstate what it says.

Dolly Parton: family labor and limited access to education
Oprah Daily reports that Parton’s father could not read or write, that the nearest school was difficult to reach, and that children in families like hers worked in fields and contributed food to the household. Her father supported Parton and her 11 siblings through farming, construction, and odd jobs. This is meaningful family and educational context, but the account does not quantify household poverty, so it should not be recast as proof of it.
Parton’s Songteller: My Life in Lyrics shares more of her stories. Oprah Daily also reported that her Imagination Library had donated 150 million books by the time of its November 2020 article; that is a dated total, not a current count.

Wealth estimates change, use different methods, and are not automatically comparable. One dated example illustrates the problem: Biography.com’s profile, updated in March 2026, reported a Forbes real-time estimate of $3.2 billion for Winfrey as of March 11, 2026. That is a secondary report of a volatile estimate, not an audited figure or a basis for ranking these four people. No consistent current wealth measure for all four is established by the sources cited here.

How to read stories about celebrities who “came from nothing”
- Ask what the source actually documents: poverty, deprivation, family work, migration, or another hardship.
- Keep a person’s own recollection distinct from an institutional or journalistic description of material conditions.
- Treat career success and wealth as separate claims that need their own evidence and dates.
- Do not compare or rank childhood hardship as though the four accounts describe the same experience.
