This list is an editorial ranking: it weighs each blade’s confirmed grade first, then its demonstrated story significance and feats, black-blade status, and the strength of the available evidence. Those factors are related, but not interchangeable—especially because the manga leaves room for a sword’s grade to change.
How to read this ranking
The sword grades indicate quality and prestige, not a complete measure of combat power. A wielder’s skill and Haki matter, and a higher grade does not guarantee a victory in a fight. Black-blade status is another distinct feature; it is not, by itself, proof that one sword outranks every other blade.
Where the available chapter-referenced material supports a grade, that is the firmest basis for placement. Entries with less comparative evidence are ranked provisionally rather than presented as settled canon. The Grand Line Archives is an unofficial fan archive that compiles manga and SBS references; the ranking below treats its chapter summaries as secondary references, not official statements.
The 10 strongest swords in One Piece
-
Yoru
Why it ranks here: Yoru is identified in a retrieved fan reference as a Supreme Grade sword and a black blade wielded by Dracule Mihawk. Those attributes make it the strongest-supported choice for the top position in this editorial list. They do not establish a canon declaration that Yoru is objectively the strongest sword in the world. The available chapter-referenced archive material does not independently confirm its grade, so treat the exact ranking as a reasoned judgment, not a settled fact.

-
Enma
Confirmed grade: Great Grade (Ō Wazamono). Why it ranks here: Enma combines a high confirmed grade with a distinct place in Zoro’s story. In the chapter 955 account compiled by the archive, Kozuki Sukiyaki says its rank might be raised depending on Zoro. That is a possibility, not a promotion: Enma remains classified here as Great Grade, not Supreme Grade. The archive’s chapter reference supports the grade and the potential for a change; it does not establish a new rank.
-
Shusui
Confirmed grade: Great Grade. Why it ranks here: In the archive’s summary of chapter 462, Ryuma identifies Shusui as a black blade and one of the twenty-one Great Grade swords. Its permanent black-blade status gives it a notable distinction, but that status alone cannot settle whether it is stronger than other blades of the same or a higher grade.

-
Wado Ichimonji
Confirmed grade: Great Grade. Why it ranks here: The archive’s SBS summary classifies Wado Ichimonji among the twenty-one Great Grade swords. It is one of Zoro’s most meaningful blades, but emotional importance and a wielder’s attachment are not measures of a sword’s comparative combat strength. Its placement reflects grade, not sentiment.
-
Nidai Kitetsu
Confirmed grade: Great Grade. Why it ranks here: The archive cites chapter 912 for Nidai Kitetsu’s place among the twenty-one Great Grade blades. Its association with the Kitetsu line’s cursed swords is a separate characteristic from its quality grade; a sword’s cursed status does not determine its tier.

-
Ame no Habakiri
Confirmed grade: Great Grade. Why it ranks here: The archive’s chapter 955 summary names Ame no Habakiri alongside Enma and Shusui among the twenty-one Great Grade swords. The available evidence does not give enough comparative feats to place it confidently above or below those peers. Its position is therefore a grade-based editorial placement, not a verdict on a demonstrated duel.
-
Shodai Kitetsu
Possible grade: Supreme Grade, according to a secondary article. Why it ranks here: The One Piece Brasil article names Shodai Kitetsu among Supreme Grade weapons. That is weaker support than a direct chapter or SBS reference in the material available for this list, so its inclusion and placement are provisional. Its presumed tier would put it among the most prestigious blades, but the evidence here does not support a confident feat-based comparison with Yoru or the confirmed Great Grade swords.
-
Ace
Possible grade: Supreme Grade, according to a secondary article. Why it ranks here: The same One Piece Brasil article lists Ace among Supreme Grade weapons. Because the available chapter archive does not independently verify that claim, its grade should be treated as reported rather than confirmed here. The evidence supports including Ace as a candidate, but not claiming a settled position among the world’s strongest swords.
-
Murakumogiri
Possible grade: Supreme Grade, according to a secondary article. Why it ranks here: One Piece Brasil also places Murakumogiri in the Supreme Grade group. That attribution makes it a strong candidate for this list, but it is not independently established by the chapter-referenced archive material used here. The ranking is provisional, and the grade claim should not be mistaken for an official ranking of combat power.

Griffon
Grade: Unconfirmed in the available evidence. Why it ranks here: Griffon is a plausible candidate because it is discussed among notable weapons in the secondary article, but that article itself treats its grade as uncertain. Without a securely established grade or enough comparative evidence in the cited material, its tenth-place position is the least certain entry. Kikoku is another discussed candidate, but the same source’s capability claims are not substantiated by the chapter archive, so this list does not rank it as a better-supported choice.
What the grades do—and do not—tell you
The Grand Line Archives summarizes the grade framework as twelve Supreme Grade (Saijō Ō Wazamono), twenty-one Great Grade (Ō Wazamono), and fifty Fine Grade (Ryō Wazamono) swords, plus an additional Wazamono tier. These are counts within the fictional world, not real-world statistics. The archive notes that early translations vary in how they render the Fine Grade count; the names here use “Great Grade” and “Fine Grade” consistently.
The archive traces the introduction of the tiers to Tashigi’s explanation in chapter 97 and says SBS material associated with volume 13 classifies Wado Ichimonji and gives the grade framework. It also summarizes chapter 955 as leaving open the possibility that a blade’s grade can rise: Sukiyaki says Enma’s rank might yet be raised depending on Zoro. That possibility does not mean Enma has already been promoted.
- Grade: a sword’s place in the named quality hierarchy.
- Black-blade status: a separate distinction, illustrated by Shusui and Yoru.
- Cursed status: another separate attribute; Kitetsu swords can share this association while having different grades.
- Combat strength: shaped by the sword and its wielder, so it cannot be read directly from grade alone.
Why the lower placements are less certain
The strongest chapter-referenced support in this comparison establishes grades for several swords, but it does not provide a complete, apples-to-apples ranking by combat feats. Shodai Kitetsu, Ace, and Murakumogiri enter through a secondary article’s Supreme Grade claims; Griffon has no secure grade in the available evidence. Those candidates are included transparently rather than presented as canon-confirmed top-ten placements.
That distinction matters: a list of ten names is not the same thing as an official top ten. For the most defensible reading, treat Yoru’s first place as an editorial choice, the Great Grade classifications as chapter- or SBS-referenced claims summarized by an unofficial archive, and the final four placements as notably more provisional.
Quick Recap
Sources and canon context
- The Grand Line Archives’ sword reference compiles chapter and SBS material and identifies itself as unofficial and unaffiliated with Oda, Shueisha, VIZ, or Toei.
- One Piece Brasil’s sword article is the secondary source for the Supreme Grade claims about Shodai Kitetsu, Ace, and Murakumogiri, and for discussion of Griffon and Kikoku. Those claims are not treated here as equivalent to direct chapter confirmation.
