These 25 performers have not won a competitive Academy Award for an acting performance, according to a selection published by Yahoo on March 15, 2026. Several have won Oscars in other categories or received honorary Academy Awards; neither is a competitive acting win. This is an editorial selection, not a complete census or ranking.
What “never won an Oscar” means here
The list concerns competitive acting awards: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, or Best Supporting Actress. An honorary Oscar recognizes a career or contribution, while a producing or writing nomination belongs to a different category. Those distinctions matter for Samuel L. Jackson, Angela Bassett, Tom Cruise, and Bradley Cooper. The selection and career details below are attributed to Yahoo’s March 15, 2026 feature.

The 25 actors, in the feature’s order
1. Amy Adams
Yahoo reports six acting nominations: five for supporting actress, for Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, and Vice, and one for lead actress, for American Hustle.
2. Edward Norton
Four acting nominations: supporting actor for Primal Fear, Birdman, and A Complete Unknown, and lead actor for American History X. At the 2025 ceremony, Kieran Culkin won supporting actor for A Real Pain; Norton was nominated for A Complete Unknown. The Academy confirms those results on its 97th Academy Awards page.

Jackson has one competitive acting nomination in the feature’s count: supporting actor for Pulp Fiction. He received an honorary Oscar in 2022, which is distinct from winning a competitive award for an individual acting performance.
4. Glenn Close
Eight acting nominations, evenly split between supporting and lead actress. The nominated films were The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, The Natural, Hillbilly Elegy, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs, and The Wife.
5. Bradley Cooper
Yahoo counts five acting nominations, for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, American Sniper, A Star Is Born, and Maestro. The feature also reports seven nominations in other categories; those are not additional acting nominations.
6. Ethan Hawke
The feature reports five career nominations, including supporting actor for Training Day and Boyhood, adapted screenplay for Before Sunset and Before Midnight, and lead actor for Blue Moon. At the 2026 ceremony, Michael B. Jordan won lead actor, so Hawke’s latest acting nomination did not result in a win. The Academy lists the nominees and results on its 98th Academy Awards page.

7. Sigourney Weaver
Three acting nominations: lead actress for Aliens and Gorillas in the Mist, and supporting actress for Working Girl.
8. Tom Cruise
Three acting nominations, for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia. His producing nomination for Top Gun: Maverick is a separate category, and his honorary Oscar, awarded in 2025, is not a competitive acting win.
9. Michelle Pfeiffer
Three nominations: supporting actress for Dangerous Liaisons, followed by lead actress nominations for The Fabulous Baker Boys and Love Field.
10. Willem Dafoe
Four acting nominations: supporting actor for Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, and The Florida Project, and lead actor for At Eternity’s Gate.
11. Ralph Fiennes
Three acting nominations, including lead actor for Conclave. At the 2025 ceremony, Adrien Brody won lead actor; the Academy’s 97th Academy Awards results confirm Fiennes’s nomination and the winner.
12. Bill Murray
One lead-actor nomination, for Lost in Translation.
13. Ian McKellen
Two acting nominations: lead actor for Gods and Monsters and supporting actor for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
14. Michelle Williams
Five acting nominations: supporting actress for Brokeback Mountain and Manchester by the Sea, and lead actress for Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn, and The Fabelmans.

The feature reports no Academy Award nomination for Carrey.
25. Angela Bassett
Two competitive acting nominations: lead actress for What’s Love Got to Do with It and supporting actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Bassett received an honorary Oscar in 2023, a separate recognition from a competitive acting win.

Oscar tallies often combine acting with producing, writing, or honorary recognition, even though they represent different kinds of Academy acknowledgment. The distinction changes how several names on this list should be described: Jackson and Bassett have honorary Oscars, Cruise’s producing recognition is not an acting award, and Cooper’s other-category nominations do not increase his acting total. The 2026 Academy results also show why a nomination count is not a win count: Hawke was among the lead-actor nominees for Blue Moon, while Jordan took the award.
