Ryan Gosling, Neve Campbell and other familiar actors showed up in the original Are You Afraid of the Dark?—sometimes in a single spooky story, sometimes as members of the Midnight Society. This is a subjective selection of 15 later-prominent performers, not a definitive ranking. It covers the original series, not the franchise’s later limited-series reimaginings.
Nickelodeon describes the original as a 1990s horror anthology told from a kid’s perspective. Paramount Press Express distinguishes that series from newer limited-series events.
One-off story appearances
Ryan Gosling
Gosling played Jamie Leary in “The Tale of Station 109.1” (1995), an episode that also featured Gilbert Gottfried as a radio DJ. The early appearance came well before Gosling became a leading film actor.
Neve Campbell
Campbell played Nonnie Walker in “The Tale of the Dangerous Soup” (1993). The role predates her best-known work in the Scream films and on Party of Five.

Emmanuelle Chriqui
Chriqui played Amanda, a hospital volunteer, in “The Tale of the Night Shift.” The episode is a reminder that the anthology often built its frightening stories around ordinary places and people.
Mia Kirshner
Kirshner played Pam Pease in “The Tale of the Hungry Hounds.” She later became recognizable for roles in television dramas including The L Word.
Eugene Byrd
Byrd played Weeds in “The Tale of the Super Specs.” The story’s title points to a familiar anthology device: an everyday object that lets its owner see something unsettling.
Hayden Christensen
Christensen played Kirk in “The Tale of Bigfoot Ridge” (1999), an early credit before his later prominence as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel films.

Colin Ferguson
Ferguson played Tommy in “The Tale of C7.” He later became widely known for starring as Jack Carter in Eureka.
Aaron Ashmore
Ashmore appeared as Billy in “The Tale of the Thirteenth Floor” and Jake in “The Tale of the Lunar Locusts.” Unlike most names on this list, he returned in more than one story role.

VanCamp played Peggy Gregory in the three-part “The Tale of the Silver Sight.” A Mental Floss retrospective identifies it as her first on-screen role; she later headlined series including Everwood and Revenge.
Actors who returned as Midnight Society members
Not every recognizable young performer was a guest in a single tale. The Midnight Society members introduced the stories, and some actors held recurring parts in that frame narrative.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher
Garcia Swisher played Sam, a recurring Midnight Society member beginning in the third season. Her part was therefore distinct from a one-episode character inside one of the group’s stories.
Rachel Blanchard
Blanchard played Kristen, another recurring Midnight Society member. Her later television work includes Clueless and You Me Her.

Jay Baruchel
Baruchel appeared in several episodes, including “The Tale of Dead Man’s Float,” “The Tale of the Zombie Dice,” “The Tale of the Walking Shadow,” and “The Tale of the Time Trap.” His multiple appearances make him one of the clearest examples of the anthology serving as an early screen stop for an actor who later became familiar in comedy and film.
Why the old credits are easy to overlook
The series was an anthology: each episode centered on a different scary tale, while the Midnight Society supplied a recurring frame. That format means a performer might be remembered as a story character, a returning narrator, or both. Paramount+’s official episode guide documents titles and premises, though its reviewed first-season page does not establish every cast pairing listed here.
The actor and character pairings above are drawn from a Mental Floss retrospective, which is a secondary source rather than a complete primary cast database. The names are not the only notable performers associated with the series; other reasonable lists could include Emily Hampshire, Laura Vandervoort or Christopher Heyerdahl.
