That response appeared before the film’s theatrical release, though it was not a guarantee of universal approval: later criticism ranged from an enthusiastic Rotten Tomatoes consensus to a sharply negative review from The Guardian.
What did the first reactions say about Heart Eyes?
One Take News reported the first social reactions on January 23, 2025, ahead of the film’s February 7 theatrical opening. The coverage highlighted Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding’s performances and the film’s combination of romance and horror. Its headline also used the phrases “A Breath of Fresh Air” and “Bloody Beautiful,” but the available reporting does not establish who originally said those words. They are best understood as language in the outlet’s headline, not as a verified quote from a named critic. One Take News’ first-reaction report.

Is Heart Eyes a horror movie or a rom-com?
It is a hybrid: a slasher horror film with romantic-comedy elements, rather than a conventional romance or a straight slasher. Directed by Josh Ruben, the 2025 film follows coworkers Ally and Jay as they become caught up in the danger posed by a masked killer who targets couples on Valentine’s Day. Holt and Gooding star. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page.
How did later critics respond?
The early praise did not settle the film’s critical reception. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes it as “A mixture of gory slasher and sweet rom-com that ingeniously nails both formulas.” That is the aggregator’s consensus, not a quote from one individual reviewer. The Guardian took the opposite view, calling it a “junky Valentine’s slasher” that is “hard to fall for,” and criticizing its script and comic execution. Together, the assessments show the central divide: some critics thought the film made its two genres work together, while others found the execution unsuccessful.
