Some celebrities have musical lives that barely register beside their best-known work. The evidence ranges from long-standing hobbies to school-band experience and preparation for a film role—different stories, and not all proof of the same level of skill. Here are ten less-expected examples, with the distinction made clear.
Actors with musical skills beyond their screen roles
1. Clint Eastwood — piano
Eastwood is widely identified with acting and directing, but piano is part of his musical life too. Biography.com includes him among celebrities who play instruments. The available account establishes the association, not a specific level of proficiency or regular performance schedule. Biography.com.
2. Keanu Reeves — bass guitar
Reeves is best known as an actor, but he has played bass in the rock band Dogstar. This is a more substantial connection than a brief on-screen performance: it involves playing with a band. Biography.com lists him as a bassist, though its roundup does not quantify his ability. Biography.com.
3. Ryan Gosling — several instruments
Gosling’s instrument list is unusually broad: Biography.com names guitar, bass, piano, and cello. His film work has also included musical performance, but a role or soundtrack appearance should not be treated as proof of equal ability on all four instruments. The source documents the range of reported instruments, not a proficiency rating for each. Biography.com.

Instrument scenes can create a misleading impression: actors may mime, learn only the material needed for a shot, or acquire a small amount of real ability for a role. In a 2023 interview with Classic FM’s Moira Stuart, Sir Patrick Stewart explained that he had pretended to play many instruments on screen and stage. He also described teaching himself the opening bars of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, while explicitly limiting the claim: “Not all of it.” His account is a useful reminder that actual skill can be real and still modest or specific to a piece.
