Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3, Episodes 1 and 2: The character most likely meant by “this week” is Otto Hightower, whom Rhaenyra executes in Episode 2. The timing is ambiguous: Jacaerys Velaryon dies in the Season 3 premiere, and Ser Simon Strong is also killed in Episode 2.
How Otto Hightower dies
After Rhaenyra’s forces reach King’s Landing, Aegon is unavailable. Otto is brought out of the Red Keep’s Black Cells, and Rhaenyra executes him before ascending the Iron Throne, according to TVLine’s coverage of the episode. Rhys Ifans plays Otto.
Episode 2 also ends the life of Ser Simon Strong, killed by Aemond in a separate scene. Reactor’s review sees Otto and Simon’s deaths as the removal of an older generation, and describes Otto as an architect of the Greens’ political actions; those are the reviewer’s interpretations, not neutral plot facts. Read Reactor’s episode review.
Why the headline could refer to Jacaerys instead
Jacaerys Velaryon dies in the Season 3 premiere during the Battle of the Gullet, after his dragon Vermax is brought down. That is a different death from Otto’s execution in Episode 2. TheWrap reports that the battle and Jace’s death were moved to Season 3 rather than being used as the originally planned end of Season 2. TheWrap’s report on the premiere and TVLine’s coverage discuss the loss.

What Otto’s death means for Rhaenyra’s ascent
Rhaenyra’s execution of Otto is not presented as a clean triumph. TVLine reports that she cries during the execution. Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, connected the character’s decision to grief: “I think grief can sometimes simplify things. And in this case, grief offers her a sort of nihilism that allows some very direct and clarified thinking. And I think actually Rhaenyra’s vengeance needs Daemon’s violence.”
D’Arcy also described the approach to Rhaenyra’s arrival at the throne: “I was really keen to make sure that that journey to the throne was as troubled as possible,” adding, “I wanted to see if we could rob that moment of its triumph, and for that to feel honest.” The comments frame the scene as an ascent shadowed by loss and vengeance, rather than a straightforward victory. TVLine’s interview with D’Arcy gives her account of the scene.

HBO describes House of the Dragon as based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before Game of Thrones. In its March 31, 2025 production announcement, the company also listed returning and new cast members for Season 3.
Reactor notes that Otto’s kidnapping and disappearance are not plot points in the source book, while the episode’s execution corresponds to his execution in the book’s history. That comparison distinguishes the show’s lead-up from the historical endpoint; it does not establish what later episodes will do. Reactor’s review discusses the adaptation choice.
