Ainz Ooal Gown is the clearest anime necromancer candidate supported by the official sources available here: Overlord describes him as an undead ruler and a high-level magic caster. But those sources do not establish ten qualifying characters or enough comparable evidence for a defensible 1–10 ranking. Rather than pad a list with vampires, undead characters, or unrelated dark magicians, this guide explains what qualifies—and why Ainz is the strongest supported example.
What counts as an anime necromancer?
For a useful ranking, a character should either be explicitly identified as a necromancer or be shown creating, raising, or commanding undead. Being undead is not enough: an undead character may be a subject of necromancy without practicing it. Dark magic, demon status, or control over living opponents also does not qualify by itself.
A comparison should then consider demonstrated range and scale, strategic use, the importance of necromancy to the character, and how clearly official descriptions or story events establish the abilities. These criteria help explain a placement, but they cannot create evidence where none is available.
1. Ainz Ooal Gown — Overlord
Why he qualifies
The official Overlord character profile identifies Ainz as the leader of the Ainz Ooal Gown guild and ruler of Nazarick, and says he was transferred to another world in his skeletal avatar. The official character page for Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom describes him as undead and a top-level magic caster. The franchise’s series introduction likewise presents its protagonist as a great magic caster in skeletal form.

Together, those details make Ainz the best-supported lead for an article about anime necromancers. They do not, on their own, establish that every spell he uses is necromancy, so it is more accurate to describe him using the official terms than to assign an unsupported spell-by-spell classification.
What his combat shows—and does not show
In an official episode synopsis, Ainz uses an instant-death spell against Shalltear. She counters with a resurrection item, and the confrontation continues at close range after both have spent their magic resources. This illustrates his dangerous magic and the role of matchup and resources in a fight; it is not proof that he outranks every other anime necromancer.

The official Overlord products page lists the novel and comic lines and credits Kugane Maruyama as the novel’s author. It is a useful starting point for readers who want to explore more of Ainz’s story; current editions and regional availability should be checked with a local bookseller.

Why this cannot honestly be a ten-character ranking
The official character and story material available for this article firmly supports Ainz’s relevance, but it does not substantiate nine additional candidates or provide comparable evidence for ordering them. A definitive “best 10” list would require reliable evidence for each character’s necromantic abilities and a consistent basis for comparing their feats. Filling the remaining places with characters who are merely undead, use dark magic, or control living beings would blur the definition rather than answer the question.
A boundary case: Aura from Frieren
Aura may look like a plausible fit because she is a powerful supernatural antagonist, but the official Frieren character profile identifies her as one of the Demon King’s Seven Sages and describes obedience magic that controls targets with less mana than she has. It does not identify her as a necromancer or describe her raising or commanding undead. Under the criteria used here, that profile alone does not qualify her for the ranking.
