1. Thanos defeats the Asgardians
The opening makes the threat immediate: the surviving Asgardians are already at the mercy of Thanos. Thor’s defeat, Loki and Heimdall’s deaths, and the destruction of many of Thor’s people establish the cost of the Stones quest before the Avengers can even assemble. The directors described this opening as a devastating defeat for Thor (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).
2. Thanos and Gamora on Vormir
Vormir turns the conflict into something more intimate than a contest for cosmic power. Thanos’s relationship with Gamora makes the sacrifice he demands personal, while her resistance exposes the gap between his claim to love her and the violence of his actions. The directors specifically identified Gamora as Thanos’s daughter and the personal ties between heroes and villains as a source of dramatic force (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).

3. The Guardians find Thor
Thor’s arrival among the Guardians briefly changes the film’s rhythm without making the danger disappear. The mismatched group’s humor gives the story room to breathe, and the scene begins an alliance that will matter in the fight against Thanos. The directors described bringing together the tones of several Marvel franchises on an unprecedented scale (Disney News, March 15, 2018).
4. Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, and Peter Parker face the threat
On Earth, Tony Stark and Doctor Strange meet as brilliant men whose confidence makes cooperation anything but automatic. Peter Parker’s presence adds a younger hero—and a personal connection to Tony—to the increasingly desperate situation. Joe Russo said the filmmakers wanted Tony and Strange together because their egos would create a compelling dynamic, and wanted Peter alongside Tony (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).

5. The Titan battle—and Star-Lord’s interruption
The heroes on Titan come close to taking the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos. That opening collapses when Star-Lord learns Gamora is dead and attacks Thanos in grief and rage. His reaction is understandable; it is also a decision with catastrophic consequences for the group’s plan. The directors said the characters’ vulnerabilities complicate their ability to act effectively, and described Star-Lord’s response as emotionally understandable (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).
6. Wanda and Vision confront the cost of the mission
Wanda and Vision’s private decision brings the Avengers’ impossible dilemma into focus: destroying the Mind Stone could stop Thanos, but it would also mean Wanda killing the person she loves. The scene matters because the choice is not abstract strategy. It is a sacrifice the characters must face at close range, under a deadline that leaves little room for hope.
7. The Avengers reunite in Wakanda
Wakanda gathers heroes who have been divided since the events that fractured the Avengers. Captain America’s reunion with his allies and his meeting with T’Challa turn the battlefield into an ensemble payoff, not merely a convenient place to put a large cast. The directors said the character pairings were chosen for their story dynamics and described Wakanda as a protected place for the heroes (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).
8. Thor arrives in Wakanda
When Thor enters the battle with Stormbreaker, the exhausted defenders get a sudden burst of hope. The arrival feels earned because it follows Thor’s solitary effort to obtain a weapon capable of challenging Thanos. Anthony Russo said the filmmakers built toward this moment; Joe Russo compared its dramatic shape to the battle arrival in Excalibur (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).

9. Wanda destroys the Mind Stone—and Thanos reverses it
Wanda makes the choice the heroes have been trying to avoid: she destroys the Mind Stone, killing Vision in order to deny Thanos the final Stone. The victory lasts only moments. With the completed Gauntlet, Thanos reverses the destruction, takes the Stone, and leaves Vision dead again. The sequence makes the price of Wanda’s decision clear while showing how far Thanos has moved beyond the heroes’ ability to control events.

Thanos snaps his fingers, and the film shifts from battle to bewildered loss as people disappear, including heroes who had seemed central to the story. The shock is not only the scale of the event: it is the survivors’ helplessness as people they know vanish in front of them. The directors expected a complicated response to the ending and discussed Spider-Man dying in Tony’s arms; WTOP quoted Joe Russo describing Thanos as completing his mission (WTOP, May 3, 2018). The film then leaves Thanos in quiet contemplation, ending his arc without resolving the wider story.

The list traces a chain of consequences rather than a parade of set pieces. The Avengers’ division weakens their response; the Titan and Wakanda groups place characters together for particular dynamics; and Thor’s arrival gives the defenders a moment of hope before the final loss. Thanos remains the story’s driving force, but the emotional weight comes from what his pursuit costs the people around him. The directors described the ending as a completed arc for Thanos while also acknowledging that killing half the characters left the filmmakers with a difficult story problem (Rotten Tomatoes, June 4, 2019).
