What Actresses Have Said About On-Screen Nudity and Their Boundaries

Actors’ accounts of on-screen nudity are personal and role-specific. These interviews show why a scene alone cannot establish lasting comfort.

A nude scene does not prove that an actor is generally comfortable with nudity. Public accounts instead show personal, role-specific decisions: performers may agree to some details, ask for others to be cut, feel uneasy, or change their preferences over time. The examples below are tied to what each actor said about a particular production or period—not presented as a ranking of who is “comfortable.”

Why a filmography cannot establish comfort

An actor’s appearance in a nude scene establishes that the scene was performed; it does not tell viewers what the performer felt, what alternatives were discussed, or whether the choice reflects a lasting preference. Comfort can depend on the role, the scene, the production process, and the moment in an actor’s career.

It is more accurate to describe a dated, attributed statement and its context than to assign someone a permanent label. The interviews below illustrate different experiences, including negotiation, discomfort, pressure, and changing boundaries.

What actresses have said about nudity and boundaries

Sydney Sweeney: requesting changes to Cassie’s scenes

Vanity Fair reported that Sweeney asked Euphoria creator Sam Levinson to cut some topless scenes involving her character, Cassie. In the same interview context, she said she had not felt Levinson was pushing a nude scene onto her. That account is evidence of her exercising agency over particular scenes, not proof of a general comfort with nudity. Vanity Fair

Amanda Seyfried: looking back on early nude scenes

Vanity Fair reported Seyfried saying she wished intimacy coordinators had been the norm when she was an up-and-coming actor filming nude scenes at 19. Her reflection is a reason not to treat participation in an early-career scene as a complete account of how comfortable or supported an actor felt at the time. Vanity Fair

Helen Hunt: a demanding role in The Sessions

In a Vanity Fair interview about The Sessions, Hunt was asked how she reached a point of comfort with the amount of nudity the role required. The question and answer concern that film and its demands; they do not establish a general preference for nude scenes. Vanity Fair

Helen Mirren: career history does not cancel out discomfort

Asked about nude scenes by The Saturday Evening Post in 2013, Mirren answered, “It’s never comfortable.” A separate Guardian profile described her early career as associated with a relaxed attitude to nudity. Those accounts have different contexts; the profile should not be used to override Mirren’s own qualification about the experience of doing nude scenes. The Saturday Evening Post · The Guardian

Anne Hathaway: discomfort about extra pay for nudity

In a Fresh Air interview, Hathaway said that the extra money associated with nudity made her uncomfortable. That statement is about her reaction to that aspect of the work, not a broad account of every scene or role. NPR’s Fresh Air

Kate Winslet: comfort can change over time

In a 2021 interview, Winslet said she was no longer as comfortable doing nudity. Her comment describes a change in her own comfort at that point in time; it is not a categorical statement about every past or future role. The Guardian

Emilia Clarke: becoming more discerning after pressure

TIME reported Clarke describing pressure to be nude on some projects and saying she had become more discerning about what she was comfortable doing. The account should be understood in the context and period of that interview, rather than generalized to all her work. TIME

Dakota Johnson: a first experience with an intimacy coordinator

Variety’s 2025 report describes Johnson’s first experience using an intimacy coordinator on a recent film and includes her characterization of that experience as tricky. It does not establish a broad comfort level with nudity. Variety

How intimacy coordination can shape a scene

Intimacy coordinator Amy Cater told Screen Australia that a useful conversation includes asking performers what they are happy to have captured on screen. Cater described approaches such as using framing or modesty coverings to imply that a character is nude, as well as allowing for preferences to change. This is a practitioner’s account of possible approaches, not a rule that every production follows. Screen Australia

Reports on Normal People offer production-specific examples: Vanity Fair described intimacy coordination as part of setting boundaries and coordinating intimate scenes, with nudity limited to what the production considered necessary to film. Vogue reported that the actors and filmmakers discussed the scenes, established boundaries, and rehearsed clothed. The Los Angeles Times has also reported intimacy coordinators describing conversations with actors about comfort and boundaries. These accounts illustrate ways a production may approach the work; they do not show that every set, scene, or performer has the same process. Vanity Fair · Vogue · Los Angeles Times

A more accurate way to describe an actor’s experience

  • Attribute the claim to a dated interview or report, rather than turning it into a permanent label.
  • Name the role or production being discussed.
  • Distinguish a performer’s choice or negotiation from discomfort or pressure.
  • Do not infer a general preference from the fact that an actor performed one nude scene.
