Three Women makes a thoughtful, if uneven, screen adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s nonfiction book: it takes female desire and the stigma surrounding it seriously, but its long, shifting structure can make the three central stories harder to follow with sustained intimacy. This is a review of the scripted Starz series, not a documentary; Taddeo created and executive produced the adaptation.

What is Three Women about?

Taddeo’s 2019 book follows the sexual lives of three real American women, drawing on nearly a decade of reporting, according to its publisher. Simon & Schuster’s book page describes Lina as a young mother in suburban Indiana whose marriage has lost its passion; Maggie as a North Dakota teenager who allegedly had a relationship with her married English teacher, followed by a criminal trial; and Sloane as a restaurant owner in the Northeast whose husband likes to watch her have sex with other people.

The Starz adaptation turns that nonfiction into scripted drama and adds Gia, a writer who gathers the women’s stories. That framing gives the series a connective thread, but also changes the balance: viewers move among Gia and the three women rather than encountering only the book’s alternating reported accounts. The series should be approached as an interpretation of those accounts, not as documentary evidence or a substitute for the book.

How does the TV adaptation hold up?

A serious subject, handled through drama

The series is interested in how women’s sexual choices are judged and in the ways desire can be complicated by longing, power, and circumstance. That attention is part of its appeal: it resists reducing the characters to a single lesson about sexuality. Its dramatic form, however, means these are performed, shaped narratives. The distinction matters especially when the story touches on abuse and sexual violence.

Gia’s frame and the cost of shifting focus

Gia provides a reason for the stories to meet, but her presence also adds another line to an already broad structure. The adaptation’s ten-episode run gives it room to move between lives; room is not the same thing as continuity. In its review, Mashable’s central reservation is that the series’ long, shifting structure makes it harder to stay close to each woman’s story. The result can feel less focused than the intimate, alternating accounts the book offers.

What the review finds valuable—and what it questions

Mashable sees value in the show’s confrontation with stigma and the complexity of female desire, while questioning whether its episodic approach gives the central stories enough depth and sustained attention. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus about how every viewer will respond. If you are drawn to character-led drama about sexuality and social judgment, the subject may hold your interest; if you want a tightly unified narrative, the shifts may frustrate.

Book and series: what is the difference?

The book The series
Lisa Taddeo’s literary nonfiction, published July 9, 2019; its publisher says it is based on nearly a decade of reporting. A scripted Starz drama created and executive produced by Taddeo, with Gia added as a writer gathering the women’s stories.
Centers on reported accounts of Lina, Maggie, and Sloane. Adapts those central stories across ten episodes, with a shifting screen structure.

The book is available in print and digital formats from Simon & Schuster. It is optional context, not a prerequisite for watching the series. For broader contemporary context, The Washington Post included the book among its notable nonfiction works of 2019, describing its subject as the pleasurable and painful complexities of female desire: the 2019 list.

Cast, episodes, and release context

Starz identifies Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise, and Gabrielle Creevy among the cast, and lists the series as a 2024 drama with ten episodes. The network announced an original U.S. premiere date of September 13, 2024. Those details establish the series’ original release, not current streaming access in every country or at every date. The Starz series page has the official series listing; availability may vary by territory and change over time.
