Songwriters Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg say that split was intentional—and that the number uses music as a tool of persuasion within Hazbin Hotel.
What “VOX POPULI” is—and who performs it
“VOX POPULI” appears in Season Two of Hazbin Hotel, with Christian Borle performing as Vox and Jeremy Jordan as Lucifer. Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg wrote the song. Apple Music credits them as its songwriters and producers, and lists Jordan and Borle as vocal performers.
The Apple Music listing for Hazbin Hotel: Season Two (Original Soundtrack) also credits George Luton as vocal arranger, Julien Nguyen as arranger, and Keith Horn as orchestrator. Its displayed date is November 19, 2025. Other catalog listings show December 12, 2025: Shazam places the track on a bonus edition, while Spotify displays that date with the track. The listings identify different editions or catalog entries, so they do not establish one definitive release date for every version of the song.
Why the song feels like two songs
In an interview with Polygon republished by se7en.ws, Haft described the construction plainly: “It’s essentially two separate pieces that we merged into one sequence.” Underberg likewise characterized the number as two distinct songs stitched together.

The arrangement makes that division part of the scene’s action. Jordan’s Lucifer section ends, and Borle’s Vox section begins; the sequence does not return to Lucifer. The musical handoff moves the focus from Lucifer’s interruption to Vox’s attempt to reclaim the stage. Haft also said the two principals did not record the number together, underscoring that the finished exchange is a composed sequence rather than a jointly recorded performance.
How the performers shaped their parts
Haft and Underberg had worked with both actors in Season One, and Haft said knowing the performers affected how they wrote the number. He specifically credited Jordan with adding gritty, rock-oriented embellishments that were not strictly on the page. Underberg described Jordan as comfortable improvising; Haft said both Jordan and Borle experimented across takes.

Those details come from the songwriters’ account in the Polygon interview, not from a published comparison of alternate takes. They help explain why Lucifer’s section has a distinct rock edge while keeping the performers’ contributions in view alongside the written song.
Why music matters to Vox’s appeal
Haft explained the show’s musical logic this way: “In the world of Hazbin Hotel, music is the lingua franca of persuasion.” He said melody can get people moving and committing before they have fully processed the message. In that context, Vox’s performance is more than a standalone song: it is a public-facing appeal, delivered with the force and momentum of a musical number.

That supports reading the scene as political theater within the story, where performance helps Vox sell his message to the crowd in Hell. It does not, by itself, make the song a direct analogy for any specific real-world political figure or movement.
