Heretic is a 2024 A24 horror thriller about two young Latter-day Saint missionaries who knock on the wrong door and meet Mr. Reed, a seemingly charming man played by Hugh Grant. The official trailer sets up a deadly cat-and-mouse game in which Reed challenges the women to defend their faith. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East play the missionaries; Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote and directed the film.
What is the Heretic trailer about?
The trailer begins with the missionaries’ visit to Reed’s home. What appears to be a conversation with a host turns into a contest of ideas and control: Reed questions the women’s beliefs, and the encounter grows more dangerous. A24’s official synopsis describes the setup as a deadly game that forces the missionaries to prove their faith. The trailer keeps the focus on that confrontation rather than explaining the film’s later turns.

That premise makes the dialogue part of the suspense. Co-writer Bryan Woods told Axios, in a statement from the production notes, that the filmmakers wanted to make something frightening in which “the scare emerges from the dialogue — through its words and ideas.” That is a description of the creative aim, not a claim that the film documents real events.
Who stars in Heretic?
- Hugh Grant plays Mr. Reed, the man who draws the missionaries into the encounter.
- Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East play the two young missionaries.
The Associated Press describes Reed as initially charming before his theological debate with the women takes a more threatening turn. Grant told the AP the part was “a challenge.”

How does the film handle faith and missionary life?
The characters are Latter-day Saint sister missionaries, but Heretic is a fictional horror thriller, not a documentary or a factual account of missionary work. Axios reported both on reactions to the film’s portrayal of the faith and on a statement from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spokesperson Doug Andersen, who said: “Like many Hollywood productions, this is a work of fiction and is not based on actual events.”
Chloe East told TIME that she saw the script as opening a dialogue with opposing arguments, and said viewers’ perspectives on the movie can differ depending on how they were raised. That is East’s view of the story’s potential interpretations, not a guarantee that audiences will agree on what it means.

When did Heretic come out?
A24’s official trailer was published on June 25, 2024, and promoted the film for theaters on November 8, 2024. Those are historical dates: the film was released in 2024. The American Film Institute lists it as a 110-minute, English-language USA production.
What is known about the home-video editions?
